Reviews Summary

Visitors find Devil's Quoits to be a unique and atmospheric historical site, appreciated for its tranquility and the intriguing nature of the stone circle. While some are aware and accepting of its reconstructed status, others find this aspect disappointing. The journey to find it and the potentially muddy paths are common points of mention.

"Recinstructed but still an eary place. Freecar park for around 8-10 cars. Path leading up to it was very muddy (February). Saw a mini murmuration."

Faheem Anwar

"A nice piece of history. Takes a while to find as it’s tucked away between and industrial site and fishing lakes at the end of a long lane but it’s well signposted when you’re there and it had its own dedicated free car park with space for about 8 cars. It’s a short walk from the car park (might be a struggle with a pushchair or wheelchair). The stones are picturesque and the site feels special. There’s a sole notice board giving some history. It’s a bit disappointing to learn the site is mostly a reconstruction and the stones are not the originals, hence just 3 star rating."

Chris Gledhill

"Fantastic place, very eery and awesome inspiring. Completely hidden from the road and very quiet. The picture shows the entrance from a small car park. Do not follow the sat navigation but keep going and you will see this sign, happy travels"

The History and Reconstruction of Devil's Quoits

Devil's Quoits is a fascinating site with roots in prehistory. While the exact age and original purpose of the stone circle are subjects of archaeological interest, the current visible structure is largely a reconstruction. This means that while you are standing amongst ancient stones, the arrangement and completeness you see today have been carefully restored to give visitors a better understanding of what it might have looked like in its prime. This reconstruction aspect is noted by visitors, with some finding it slightly disappointing while others appreciate the effort to preserve and present the history. Reddit

Understanding that it's a reconstruction doesn't diminish the atmospheric quality of the site. The stones themselves, even if repositioned or supplemented, evoke a sense of deep time and ancient rituals. The location, somewhat secluded and nestled between modern industrial and recreational areas, adds to its mystique. It's a place that encourages contemplation about the past and the people who built such monuments thousands of years ago. Reddit

For those interested in the specifics, a notice board at the site offers some historical context. However, the true magic of Devil's Quoits often lies in the feeling it evokes – a quiet, sometimes eerie, and profoundly historical space that invites visitors to connect with a distant past. Reddit

This unexpected display of nature adds another layer to the experience, transforming a historical visit into a moment of natural wonder. It's a reminder that even seemingly quiet places can be teeming with life. Reddit

When planning your visit, consider the time of day. The late afternoon light, often referred to as the 'golden hour,' can enhance the visual appeal of the stones and the landscape, further deepening the atmospheric experience. Reddit
