What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Witney Lakes offers a mixed bag of experiences. While the golf course and spa treatments receive high praise for quality and skilled staff, the overall spa facilities and some refreshment offerings have been criticized for not meeting expectations. Positive interactions with reception staff like Sophie and Gus are frequently mentioned, highlighting good customer service in specific areas.
"We were greeted by a lovely lady at reception who welcomed us, signed us in and showed us over to the Pure Spa. We checked in at the spa and were shown to the relaxation room. The room was freezing. Tea and coffee were available for us to make and so we thought it was a great time for a coffee break. Only 1 mug was available. The other had been discarded on a nearby table. There were no facilities to wash this mug. I picked up the milk from the mini fridge and poured it into my coffee, only to be presented with floating curdled bits. Odd I thought and so I tried another. The same. I checked the date on the milk and discovered it had gone out of date 4 MONTHS PRIOR!!! I checked all the other milks in the fridge and they were all the same! Honestly, how that had been allowed to happen is beyond me and raised concerns as to what else would be wrong in the place. We were due to have 1 hour in the Spa area, followed by 2 hours of treatments. The changing rooms were awful. Half the lockers we tried didn’t work and there were only 2 pretty filthy cubicles to change in. Once through to the ‘spa’ we discovered we had most certainly been misled. It isn’t a spa at all. It is a glorified leisure centre with treatment rooms of the other side of the building. The pool was tiny! 🤦♀️ 2 lanes, 1 fast and 1 slow with about 6 people in each side. You could do maybe 3 breast strokes at best to get from one end to the other. That’s it. The stench of chlorine was so strong that our eyes stung and we got headaches after about 10 minutes. The sauna was as expected but smelt like a dirty fish tank. The jacuzzi wasn’t big enough for more than 2 people and so we never went in it as 2 large men had claimed it as there own. We abandoned our time in the ‘spa’ and went to the lounge for refreshments instead. Firstly, this area appears to be used mainly as a remote working hub. Secondly, the drinks are VILE! I ordered a tea and a matcha latte. The tea was average. Luke warm at best but drinkable. The matcha latte…. Well. It turned up as an iced version (which the menu made no mention of) & was so badly made that it had all separated in the glass. The glass that was used also, i was shook & considered that a hate crime 🤪 The ‘barista’ asked me “what is matcha anyways? Is it just grass because I don’t actually know?!” - which of course, just further added another red flag for this place. It was totally undrinkable.
We went back to the Pure Spa for our treatments, where we were asked if we’d like separate rooms or a dual room. We opted for separate. We were then informed that there was only 1 female therapist and so 1 of us would have a male therapist. We were extremely taken aback and found this utterly unprofessional to have not mentioned this prior to our visit. Had we of known, we would have chosen elsewhere. We changed our initial selection and opted for a dual room as I did not feel safe to be treated by a male in a room alone. Fortunately, the treatments were actually really good and the only redeeming part of our visit to Whitney Lakes. The therapists are knowledgable and skilled and the products used are of high quality. Honestly, overall, for the distance we travelled and the price we paid for our experience, it was a total flop. A catalog of poor performances in several areas left us feeling totally deflated.
Don’t come here if you’re looking for a lovely relaxing spa day because you will not find that here.
The absolute cheek this place has to market itself as a high end resort!
Awful place. AVOID."

"I’ve been visiting Witney Lakes both for Golf and Gym on and off for 10 years. The golfing facility is good quality, Deana the head coach for Golf is ridiculously good and the absolute jewel in The Crown. However, I write this review because after 10 years, I’ve just had the best customer experience I have ever hard from reception! Thank you, Sophie for being polite, engaging and just overall friendly, you are a real attribute to the club."

"I called to book a tee time and had the pleasure of speaking with Gus.
Although Gus wasn’t the staff member who typically handles bookings, he went above and beyond to help me out. He answered all my questions and made sure the whole process was smooth and professional.
All businesses need more people like Gus!
I’m now all booked in and looking forward to playing at Witney Lakes Golf Course this weekend.
Big thanks to Gus and the Witney Lakes team - see you soon!

The Spa Experience: What to Expect
Furthermore, issues with locker functionality, changing cubicle cleanliness, and even the quality of refreshments like out-of-date milk and poorly made drinks have been highlighted. There's also a note about potential discomfort regarding therapist gender, with one visitor being surprised to learn only one female therapist was available, leading to a need to adjust booking arrangements.
