Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge, in the Western Highlands. It was here that Churchill’s elite Commandos underwent gruelling training. Many failed and were returned to their units, some died, but those that made it through were highly trained and motivated and took part in some of the most challenging missions of WW2.

The peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity for reflection are frequently highlighted. Some note that on-site historical information is limited, suggesting prior research is beneficial.

"Such a beautiful spot and the view from the top is marvelous. The climb is a spiral stone staircase 200 years old, a little tight to climb with a hatch opening at the top that is definitely a squeeze with a backpack on. I had to remove mine. The hatch stays open so be careful on the top which is also quite small but not scary. Give it a try xx"

"A must visit site for me. I last came here nearly 40 years ago as a child with my parents. My grandfather had been in the unit in WWII and I used to have one of his Commando blankets over my bed as a young lad. A poignant stop for me and blessed with some great weather too"

Rich Ward
