I made friends with a shrew in a sphagnum moss bog! What a day it was. I was wandering off the board walk in @rspbcymru ynys hir and saw a tiny fluffy brown creature running across the path. On further investigation it was this tiny little shrew! And once I had stopped for a bit he was very content to continue foraging for food around me and even underneath me at some points! I made a friend 🐹 ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise RSPB Ynys-hir for its beautiful natural landscapes, diverse birdlife, and peaceful atmosphere. The bird hides and boardwalk are highlights, offering unique viewing opportunities. However, some find the facilities limited and accessibility challenging for those with mobility issues.

"The trails and parking area are open even when the visitor center isn't. We arrived early to do some walking and bird watching before the day got too warm. We enjoyed seeing all the birds at their feeder. We didn't see that many from the hides but we were grateful for the input of other birders on what we did see. Nice hiking/walking. The visitor center had ice cream, cakes and cold drinks. Definitely recommend for bird enthusiasts."

"A relatively old nature reserve, this site has a small car park and limited facilities in terms of visitor centre, food/drink & shop. However, it is has helpful staff to help give advice about the site and the various pathways.
The site is not easily accessible, with very limited facilities - the pathways and hides are older and not designed for wheelchair access etc, some paths are narrow and have short relatively steep sections, and the accessible toilet facilities are very basic.
However, the site has a lovely range of bogs, marshlands, small lakes, and wonderful old oak woodlands. When I visited in the spring, the bluebells were out enmasse and the woods full of birds singing. The hides gave good viewing over the lake, river valley and surrounding hills.
The site is a lovely more natural contrast to the nearby more modern facilities of the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust Dyfi Osprey Project, and in between there is a layby overlooking the river Dovey and marshland."

"If you’re into outdoor walks and birding - this is a wonderful slice of wildlife and tranquility (when the RAF aren’t on jet training runs). A fascinating landscape off the beaten path. No dogs allowed. Wonderfully friendly RSPB staff too."
