Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Marquess of Anglesey's Column for its stunning panoramic views and the rewarding climb up its 115 steps. The friendly staff, pleasant cafe, and accessible facilities are also highlighted as major positives, making it a highly recommended local attraction.

"Delightful visit here yesterday. They have really made this venue appealing. The cafe was lovely and they have made the best of the views. It's good to see they have reduced the price of going up the column to £5. The path up from the car park is tricky but they have made alternative access for the disabled. Even so we think they could do with some handrails down by the car park as the plastic matting is a bit slippy on the way down. We will definitely visit again, a very pleasant venue. Would recommend."

"Great attraction and highly recommend a visit. Climb the tower. Doesn't take too long. It was extremely windy when we got there. But the views was magnificent. Staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. Free parking and about 2/3 minutes to the centre."

Leena Gale

Our guide was so knowledgeable and friendly, happy to answer all our questions. Views from the top give a superb view of the beautiful island. Can recommend enough."

Deep Dives

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of the Column

The Marquess of Anglesey's Column stands as a tribute to Henry Paget, the 1st Marquess of Anglesey, a distinguished military figure who lost his leg at the Battle of Waterloo. The column was erected in his honor by the people of Anglesey in 1817, shortly after the battle. It's a testament to local pride and admiration for his service.

The column's design is quite distinctive, featuring a statue of the Marquess at its apex, though this is not always visible from the ground. The construction itself, with its internal spiral staircase, was an engineering feat for its time. Visitors can learn more about the Marquess's life and the history of the column through information boards located at the site. Reddit

Interestingly, the column has also gained a more recent, albeit unrelated, cultural reference. The code name 'Operation Menai Bridge' for the plan following King Charles III's death is named after the nearby Menai Suspension Bridge, highlighting the region's significance. TikTok

Experiencing the Climb

The ascent to the top of the Marquess of Anglesey's Column involves climbing 115 steps. These steps form a spiral around a central wooden column, creating a unique and somewhat enclosed climbing experience. While not excessively steep, the continuous nature of the spiral can be a bit disorienting for some, and it's important to take your time. Reddit

Visitors consistently praise the magnificent views from the summit. On a clear day, the 360-degree panorama encompasses the entire island of Anglesey, the Irish Sea, and the mountains of Snowdonia. It's a truly breathtaking reward for the climb. However, be prepared for strong winds at the top, which can make the experience exhilarating but also require a firm footing and appropriate clothing. Reddit

For those who find the 115 steps challenging, the venue has made provisions for alternative accessible access, ensuring that the stunning views are not exclusive to those who can manage the climb. This thoughtful inclusion makes the attraction more welcoming to a wider range of visitors. Reddit

Amenities and Visitor Comfort

The Marquess of Anglesey's Column site has been thoughtfully developed to enhance the visitor experience. A lovely cafe is situated at the base of the column, offering a welcoming spot to relax. Visitors can enjoy fresh food, including cakes and breakfast sandwiches, and a good cup of coffee. The cafe is also noted as being dog-friendly, which is a significant plus for many travelers. Reddit

Free parking is readily available, making arrival convenient for those driving. The venue also provides clean and accessible toilets, catering to the needs of all visitors. The staff and volunteers are frequently mentioned in reviews for being knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful, contributing significantly to the positive atmosphere of the attraction. Reddit+1

While the path from the car park to the column has been described as 'tricky' by some, with suggestions for handrails due to potential slipperiness, the overall impression is that the venue has made a concerted effort to improve accessibility and amenities, making it a pleasant and worthwhile visit.
