Conquer Cribyn: Essential Prep

Cribyn, a dramatic 795m peak in the Brecon Beacons, offers breathtaking views but demands respect. Be prepared for steep ascents and potentially challenging terrain. Check weather forecasts religiously, as conditions can change rapidly. Proper hiking gear, including sturdy boots and waterproofs, is non-negotiable. Consider bringing a map and compass, or a reliable GPS device, as mobile signal can be intermittent.

Weekends and public holidays see the most visitors, especially those tackling the popular Pen y Fan horseshoe. For a more serene experience, aim for weekdays or early mornings. Sunset hikes are magical but require careful planning for your descent, as daylight fades quickly and navigation becomes trickier.

However, the demanding climb requires good fitness, and the unpredictable Welsh weather can impact the experience.

"Beautiful views from the top. Just need to be wary that it's a bit of a steep climb so good fitness is required to climb."

"Climbed Cribyn as part of the horseshoe trek covering all three peaks, four if you count Bryn. Had a really steep climb onto Cribyn from Bryn. Very challenging but hugely satisfying and rewarding. Not many people using this route, mostly coming to Cribyn from Pen y fan which was useful. Amazingly long and beautiful walk."

Michael Jones

"Direct and uncompromising, steep and airy. Cribyn approached from the north via Cymcynwyn and Bryn Teg.
The finish onto the summit is a thing of beauty"
