What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate Cookham Moor for its natural beauty, offering lovely walks along the Thames and scenic views from Winter Hill. It's a dog-friendly haven with picnic spots and a nearby pub. However, the coin-only parking system is a recurring point of frustration, and the area can be prone to flooding.
"Dear National Trust,
I know you manage medieval properties but it really doesn't mean you have to use medieval parking charging methods in a form of coins only! It honestly wouldnt hurt if you added an app payment or contactless of some sort. I was lucky to have some coins with me. It would be a reall bummer to travel all that way from London and not be able to park there. Other than that a very nice car park ( ☆☆☆☆ AS IT IS COIN ONLY)
Sincerely,
Customer M & G"

"Haven't used this car park for a number of years but nothing seems to have changed apart from the fact that parking is no longer free but cost is only £2 : 00 for all day which seems eminently reasonable .However , it is free if you are a N. T. member ( just scan your membership card ). Payment by coin.
The car park is gravel surfaced & in decent condition but spaces are limited . I suggest you may have a problem getting a space on a Sunday or B/H.
It was pretty busy on the Saturday we visited but cars kept coming & going at a good turnover rate . Also you might squeeze in to a space beyond the surfaced area either side of the pathway leading into the field.
That said , Once parked you can walk through the field & follow the Thames & the open meadows are great for picnics , letting dogs have a good run or swim in the river. Carry on to The Bounty pub which seems unchanged for many years & enjoy a drink & food - there is loads of outdoor seating & dogs & children are welcome.
Also you can carry on through to Winter Hill & climb up for great views & there are numerous opportunities for a circular walk of pretty much any length & variety that you may fancy."

"The Cookham Moor car park is a gravel paved car park set on the moor and beside the Marsh Meadow.
It’s a good place to park for exploring Cookham or for walking. There are two or three benches for picnics. There’s usually an ice cream van in the corner.
The car park is about 470m/500yd from the River Thames.
On the opposite side of the road is the Fleet Bridge, built in 1929.
It should be noted that when the river is in flood, Cookham Moor and the car park are under water.
The parking tariffs are odd, either 1h or 24h (£2)."

Exploring the Thames Path
Many visitors use Cookham Moor as a base for circular walks. These can be tailored to different fitness levels and time constraints, often incorporating a climb up Winter Hill for rewarding views or a visit to the historic Bounty pub. The varied terrain ensures an engaging experience for all walkers. Remember to wear comfortable footwear suitable for uneven paths and potentially muddy conditions, especially after rain.
It's worth noting that the Thames Path can be affected by seasonal flooding. While the moor itself may become submerged, the higher sections of the path usually remain accessible. Always check local flood warnings before embarking on longer walks, particularly during autumn and winter months.
Parking and Access Considerations
Spaces in the car park can be limited, especially on weekends and bank holidays. While there is a good turnover of vehicles as walkers complete their excursions, arriving early or being prepared to wait for a space is recommended. In busy periods, visitors might find additional parking spots beyond the surfaced area, either side of the pathway leading into the field. Considerate parking is essential to ensure that others can also find a space.
Accessibility can be impacted by weather. When the River Thames is in flood, Cookham Moor and the car park can become submerged. This is a natural occurrence and visitors should check local conditions before their visit, especially during periods of heavy rainfall. Despite these considerations, the car park remains a vital access point for enjoying the natural beauty of Cookham Moor and its surroundings.
