What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Chappel Viaduct as an impressive feat of Victorian engineering and a beautiful sight. Many enjoy the experience of seeing trains cross and appreciate the historical significance. Some note the limited train frequency and suggest optimal viewing spots like The Swan pub.
"This is beautiful and always amazing to come and visit. We went to the pub and the to the viaduct. Really good information about it and how it was involved in the war. If you want to see the trains going over it you need to be in the pub garden. Also a fab view when you go over on the train."
Susannah Hughes
"The Chappel Viaduct is a Grade 1 European Monument, and one of the largest brick structures in the UK (second only to the Battersea Power Station). I've travelled across it hundreds of time in a train but you don't really get a sense of its size and scale until you walk beneath it.
It was orginally built to have two sets of train tracks, but only ever had one set installed, and now only serves the Sudbury to Marks Tey line, which is only 19 trains per day, and is likely a huge underutilization of what is was originally planned for. It also looks like a huge structure for a relatively small river.
Its well worth a look close up, but the best views are from a few hundred metres away on Millenium Green or on the approach from other footpaths in the area."
Russell Reed
"Amazing structure and feat of engineering and appears to be the 2nd largest brick structure in the UK."
