What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Castell Cawr is appreciated for its historical significance as an Iron Age hillfort and the stunning panoramic views it offers over Abergele and the coastline. Visitors enjoy the walk through the ancient woodlands, noting it's a great spot for dogs. However, the site has minimal visible ruins, and parking can be challenging.
"On the summit of Coed y Gopa and its ancient woodlands is Castell Cawr (Giant's Castle), an Iron Age hillfort dating back 2,000 years, to the time of the invasion of the Romans, who established a trading centre at nearby Abergele.
The Celtic peoples enjoyed the benefits of this defensive structure, with huge earth ramparts topped by a timber palisade, and sheer cliffs to the north and east.
Nowadays there is not much to see of this Scheduled Ancient Monument, but just use your imagination."

"This is a fabulous place to walk with the dog! As long as you’ve got pretty good recall, your dog will have a lot of fun off lead.
There is some really clear paths to choose from and they are marked well. I would recommend stout footwear as it is often uneven and muddy.
Theres ruins at the top which aren’t much to see, but it’s nice that there’s a board and you know you’ve visited a bit of history.
The views over Abergele and the coastline are superb from a few points on the way up.
It’s not for people who can’t manage a bit of a hike; it’s got some persistent hills to tackle.
Suggest parking on a side street nearby, as there’s nothing really ‘good’ and reliable for parking nearby 🙂
If this was helpful, give it a like so it can help others 😉 Have a nice day!"

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider bringing snacks and drinks as there are no facilities on-site. The ancient woodlands offer a natural playground, and if you have a dog, it's a great spot for them to enjoy off-lead exercise (with good recall). Parking can be tricky, so plan your arrival and parking strategy in advance.
🐶 Dog Owners
Remember to bring water and waste bags for your pet. While the paths are generally clear, the uneven ground means you should be mindful of your dog's paws and ensure they don't stray too far from marked trails, especially near steeper drops. The views are a bonus for you, and the freedom is a bonus for them!
🚶♀️ Hikers and Nature Lovers
Be prepared for the uneven and muddy terrain by wearing appropriate footwear. The site itself, while not boasting extensive ruins, offers a tangible connection to the past with its earth ramparts and historical interpretation board. It’s a place to appreciate history and nature in equal measure.

Its proximity to the Roman trading centre at Abergele further underscores its strategic significance in ancient times.
