"Really loved it here. Fascinated by the duck decoy ~ no idea what it was about before going here. Guide really friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Now know what it's all about. Such a clever way to capture the ducks 🦆 (although not very humane for the ducks 🙁) Great little walk around the site with clearly labelled points to look out for. Good carparking. Would definitely recommend a visit. Why not also go to the Borstal National Trust tower which is only open for a few times a year while you are here.

It's really great for the National Trust to own and manage these types of property as well as the stately homes. So interesting!"

"The information hut was closed when I was there and there were no signs that gave information on the duck decoys. There was still a nice wooded area and small lake to explore, a bird watching hide, and den building area."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Ingenious Duck Decoy

The Boarstall Duck Decoy is a remarkable 16th-century invention, a testament to historical ingenuity in waterfowl capture. It features a central pond with radiating channels, known as 'pipes,' designed to lure ducks in. As the birds swam down these pipes, they would be trapped by a net at the end. This method allowed for the capture of large numbers of ducks without disturbing the main flock. While fascinating from a historical perspective, it's worth noting the ethical considerations of such hunting methods. Reddit

Visitors can learn more about the decoy's function and history from displays, though it's recommended to check if the information hut is open for the most detailed insights. The structure itself, though no longer actively used for hunting, remains a unique and intriguing feature of the site, offering a tangible link to past practices. Reddit

Exploring the Ancient Woodlands

Beyond the decoy itself, the Boarstall Duck Decoy site boasts beautiful ancient woodlands. These mature forests offer a tranquil escape with well-maintained paths suitable for easy walking. The woodland provides a habitat for diverse wildlife, making it a pleasant environment for nature lovers and families alike. Reddit

During spring, the woodlands are particularly picturesque, with potential for wildflowers and vibrant greenery. The National Trust ensures these areas are accessible, making them ideal for a leisurely stroll, a family outing, or simply a quiet moment surrounded by nature. Keep an eye out for opportunities for den building, a popular activity for younger visitors. Reddit
