Hike takes about an hour. 1 big push uphill, dogs are ok on the castle trail but not at the farm. Park at the Gibbet Hill farm! #grotonma #massachusetts #bostontravel #boston

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Bancroft Roman Villa for its free entry, ample parking, and the pleasant atmosphere of Bancroft Park, making it an ideal spot for dog walks and family outings. While the ruins themselves are not extensive, the well-maintained site and informative boards offer a good historical glimpse. Some visitors suggest guided tours for a more in-depth experience.

"initially discovered in 1971 during the development of the Bancroft estate. Excavations over 15 years revealed a villa complex with evidence of multiple phases of occupation, including a previous villa destroyed by fire. The most prominent phase was a large winged-corridor villa dating from the late 3rd century, featuring geometric mosaics and a bath suite. The villa also included a formal garden with a fishpond and a possible summerhouse.
Not much left but still a great place, and free, nice place for a walk with the dog as well."

"Visited early on Christmas morning and there was the occasional friendly dog walkers in the park area out and about but there was plenty of room around us to share the space.

The ruins were perfectly fine to walk around even when the ground was wet, only a few small puddles on the site itself.

It's a nice spot to stroll, take a dog-walk or explore the ruins and it was a tidy area with dog waste bins by the car park."

"Free to visit with free nearby parking & a small cafè. Good information boards & very well maintained by The Parks Trust. Childrens playground not too far away too. Great for family walks or dog walks. Concrete Cows not far away along a bridle track then onward to Bradwell Abbey, excellent circular walk"
