Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Asklepion Pergamon for its well-preserved state and historical significance as a pioneering ancient healing center. The impressive scale of the infrastructure, particularly the healing tunnel and sacred spring, leaves a lasting impression. Some visitors note that a knowledgeable guide significantly enhances the experience, bringing the site's rich history to life.

"Healing Sanctuary of the Ancient World /
The Asclepieion of Pergamon was not only a center for physical healing, but also a symbolic heart of ancient Greco-Roman medical science. Founded in the 4th century BC and flourishing during the Roman period, it was one of the three most famous healing temples of antiquity, alongside Epidaurus and Kos. It functioned as a sacred place where medicine, religion, and ritual came together in harmony.

Patients would undergo purification rituals, offer sacrifices, and enter the temple through a long sacred way. Inside, treatments included dream interpretation, the use of medicinal herbs, hydrotherapy, mud baths, and even sound therapy using music and theater. The sacred spring was believed to have healing powers, and the underground tunnel—used to guide patients from the entrance to the heart of the sanctuary—symbolized a spiritual transition.

When we visited the site, we were truly amazed by the scale of the sanctuary, especially the tunnel and the sacred water area. Even though centuries have passed, the infrastructure was still impressive. The massive columns, the length of the healing tunnel, and the well-preserved water systems reflected how advanced and well-planned this place was. It made us appreciate how seriously healing and human well-being were taken in the ancient world.

"We went as part of a tour towards the end of January and the place was very quiet. It is a beautiful location, steeped in the history of being the first medical healing space in the Western world. We were accompanied by a knowledgeable tour guide who explained everything to us. We were lucky to be the only 6 people there and had plenty of time to take a lot of uninterrupted photos. Highly recommended."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Ancient Art of Healing at Asklepion

Asklepion Pergamon was a groundbreaking medical center in the ancient world, renowned for its holistic approach to healing. Founded in the 4th century BC, it was dedicated to Asklepios, the Greek god of medicine. Patients sought treatment not just for physical ailments but also for mental and spiritual well-being. Instagram+2

The sanctuary employed a variety of therapeutic methods. These included the use of a sacred spring believed to possess healing properties, medicinal herbs, hydrotherapy, and mud baths. A unique aspect was the practice of 'incubation,' where patients would sleep in designated areas, hoping for divine guidance or healing dreams, which were then interpreted by priests. Instagram

Famous physicians like Galen practiced here, contributing to the site's reputation. The advanced infrastructure, including the long underground tunnel designed to guide patients and symbolize a transition, and the well-restored theater for therapeutic performances, highlight the sophisticated understanding of medicine and patient care in antiquity. Exploring the Pergamon Acropolis

While the Asklepion is a distinct site focused on healing, it's often visited in conjunction with the Pergamon Acropolis, the ancient city's upper citadel. This area was the administrative, religious, and cultural heart of the Pergamon Kingdom. Instagram+1

The Acropolis boasts several remarkable structures. The Great Altar of Zeus, though partially reconstructed and housed in Berlin, was once a monumental centerpiece. The Temple of Athena and the Library of Pergamon, once holding thousands of scrolls, showcase the city's intellectual and religious importance. Instagram

Perhaps the most striking feature of the Acropolis is its theater. Carved into the steep hillside, it's considered one of the steepest ancient theaters in the world, capable of seating around 10,000 spectators. The views from the top are breathtaking, offering a panoramic perspective of the surrounding landscape and the modern town of Bergama. TikTokInstagram

The 'Throne of Satan' and Religious Significance

The ancient city of Pergamon, and specifically its Acropolis, holds a significant place in early Christian history. It is mentioned in the Book of Revelation as the 'Throne of Satan,' referring to the city's strong pagan traditions and the worship of Emperor cults. TikTok

This designation highlights the intense religious and political climate of the time. The Pergamon Altar, a massive structure dedicated to Zeus, was a focal point of pagan worship and likely contributed to this perception by early Christians who viewed such practices as idolatrous. TikTok

Visiting the site offers a unique perspective on the clash of cultures and religions in the ancient world. Understanding this historical context adds another layer of depth to the exploration of Pergamon's ruins, beyond its architectural and medical significance. TikTok
