"Ancient East Roman Empire ruins of the IVth century A.D. on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in Kumkuyu Village. The original Roman or Byzantine name of this settlement is unknown. Locals call it Akkale, which means white castle or white palace. This complex was dug out by the Turkish archeologist Mustafa Semavi Eyice (1922-2018), who specialized in Byzantine culture. Eyice thought that this settlement was founded by yet by Archelaus (before 36 B.C-17 A.D.) the Roman client Prince of Cappadocia. Here probably was the palace, churches, and a huge cistern repaired during the Byzantine Empire. Cistern is one of the biggest in entire Cilicia and could keep 17 thousand cubic meters of the water. There is also the mausoleum in that complex of ruins. Kumkuyu, Erdemli Municipality, Mersin Province, 🇹🇷 Turkey 🇹🇷. September 17, 2024."
