"At a walking distance from old town, I visited in the evening. It closes at 8. Very beautiful decorated Chinese temple witnessing history of Phuket. There are statues of lions at the entrance of the main temple. These statues have rolling stone balls in their mouth. I wonder, how these balls are carved out inside the mouth. There is a huge long trunk of a tree kept horizontally with a garland on it. I could not get the significance of it."

NITIN KALE

"An important taoist temple in the region. Must visit if you are here. Inside, there is also a small shrine for the goddess of mercy. Make a donation to support if you can."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival (also known as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival) is a spectacular annual event that transforms the island, with Jui Tui Shrine being a central hub. Held over nine days in October, the festival is a period of purification and devotion for the local Chinese community. During this time, participants abstain from meat and other stimulants, believing it cleanses the body and spirit. Instagram+1

The most visually striking aspect of the festival is the elaborate street processions. Devotees, often in white, parade through the streets carrying various religious artifacts and performing acts of self-mortification, such as piercing their cheeks with sharp objects. These processions are a powerful display of faith and are a major draw for tourists seeking a unique cultural experience. Instagram

Beyond the processions, the festival is a fantastic opportunity to sample authentic vegetarian Thai and Chinese cuisine. Food stalls pop up everywhere, offering a vast array of delicious plant-based dishes. It's a culinary adventure not to be missed, even if you're not participating in the vegetarian diet yourself. You'll see locals offering fruits, flowers, and other symbolic items to the deities. It's a place where you can witness the deep-rooted traditions and beliefs of Phuket's Chinese heritage. Instagram

While the shrine is a significant religious site year-round, its importance is amplified during the Vegetarian Festival. It becomes a hive of activity, with ceremonies, prayers, and the preparation for the grand processions. Even outside of the festival, the shrine offers a glimpse into the spiritual heart of Phuket Town and is a must-visit for those interested in local culture and history. Instagram
