Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the unforgettable and heartwarming experiences at ethical elephant sanctuaries in Chiang Mai, highlighting the respectful interactions and the visible care for the rescued animals. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, some mention concerns about transportation comfort and the need for thorough research to ensure true ethical practices. TikTokReddit+1

"Wonderful experience! We spent half a day here, and it’s clear the elephants are very well cared for. We began the morning feeding them, learned about their behavior and lifestyle, and then enjoyed ‘bathing’ them in the river. The group size was just right—small enough to have plenty of opportunities to interact with the elephants and ask the caregivers questions. Pickup and transportation were smooth and comfortable with AC. Overall, a truly memorable experience!"

Jana H.

"It was an incredible experience.!!! Words cannot express. The service was top tier and the amenities were perfect. The guide who accompanied us, Pan, and the one we met at the sanctuary, Tip, was phenomenal. A must do when you come to Thailand. You come to Chiang Mai, it is worth the experience. I was in Bangkok and traveled to Chiang Mai for this experience. Our driver's name was Mr. Happy, and he was Amazing!!! There are many tours such as this, but my tour was incredible!!!"

"Do not miss. Do the full day, the only people that should ever be doing half day are those with kids.

An experience like no other. You hang, feed, bathe and walk with 🐘 's. What more could you ask for? 5-7 elephants per camp, we got lucky with a baby and the community of momma's, it was quite the adventure.

Ethical, awesome, and just plain cool.

Not much walking for you lazy peeps, so don't worry, maybe 45 minutes at most, but that's with frequent stops when you're walking with the elephants through their forest path.

Education, interaction and lunch make this experience a do not miss.

Grateful to Thailand and their amazing culture of love for elephants. You cannot ride the elephants, and that's a good thing.

Our guide, 'On' was amazing. Her and the whole team. Our driver was fast, prompt and no issues with pickup or dropoff.

PERSONAL REQUEST TO THE KING OF THAILAND, PLEASE BAN ELEPHANT RIDING IN YOUR COUNTRY. THE STORIES FROM THE MAHOUTS BREAKS MY HEART."

The Ethics of Elephant Sanctuaries

The term 'ethical elephant sanctuary' is crucial when visiting Thailand. Many online sources and travelers emphasize the importance of researching sanctuaries to ensure they prioritize animal welfare over profit. True sanctuaries focus on rescuing elephants from abusive industries like logging and tourism rides, providing them with a safe and natural environment. TikTokReddit+1

Key indicators of an ethical sanctuary include: no elephant riding, no forced bathing or performances, and a focus on observation rather than constant interaction. Some sanctuaries, like Elephant Nature Park, are highly regarded for their commitment to these principles, allowing elephants to roam freely and interact on their own terms. TikTokReddit

It's important to be wary of places that still offer riding, bathing sessions on demand, or use bullhooks and chains. While some may claim to be ethical, the presence of these activities often suggests otherwise. Your visit can directly support the well-being of these magnificent creatures if you choose wisely. TikTokReddit
