Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the extensive ruins and dramatic sea views at the Temple of Apollo Smintheus, especially when enjoyed with few crowds. However, the admission fee is considered high by some, given the perceived lack of maintenance and limited information. The challenging terrain also requires appropriate footwear.

"The Ruins inside were spectacular, make sure your have at least two hours to experience this sprawling site.

Getting there is quite arduous though especially for non trekkers like me. We arrived 4pm and it closes at 5pm so we didn't have much time to circulate. If there are not many tourists you can actually bring your vehicle way up to the entrance gates but parking is limited and navigating the narrow cobblestone one-way roads can be treacherous though so if you can walk up instead you would be kinder to your car. Your shoes must be for trekking though coz mine wasn't and was wrecked by the slippery cobblestones"

Maya Bandolon-Cartojano

"Excellent site with extensive ruins and no crowds. Make sure you walk down the hill at the back to see the agora and amphitheatre. Price is reasonable compared to other Turkish sites. You can enter twice in the same day on your ticket, so we did, but it was best at 8:30 am when there was nobody else around. I just wish the gate at the bottom was open so you could walk to the harbour."

Dave Hinchliffe

"Admission fee was 250 TL for foreigners, which sounds too much for us, so we didn't go in. It was good enough to take photos from outside."

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Visiting the Temple of Apollo Smintheus with children requires careful planning. The slippery cobblestone paths can be a hazard for little ones, so ensuring everyone wears appropriate footwear is paramount. Reddit The extensive nature of the ruins means there's a lot of ground to cover, so consider bringing snacks and plenty of water, especially if visiting during warmer months. Reddit While the historical aspect is engaging, the lack of extensive signage might require parents to provide their own context and stories to keep younger children interested. The agora and amphitheater at the lower section might be more engaging for kids to imagine ancient life. Reddit

🚶 Budget Travelers

Reddit+1 If the fee is a concern, consider enjoying the views from the outside and taking photos from the periphery, as suggested by one reviewer. In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating the Ancient Site

The Temple of Apollo Smintheus is a sprawling archaeological site that requires a good amount of time and energy to explore fully. Visitors are advised to allocate at least two hours to wander through the extensive ruins. A key recommendation from travelers is to make sure you walk down the hill at the back of the site to discover the agora and amphitheater, which are often highlighted as must-see areas. Reddit+1

The terrain consists of ancient cobblestone paths, which can be quite slippery and challenging, especially after rain or in certain conditions. This has led to strong advice from visitors to wear sturdy trekking shoes rather than casual footwear to ensure safety and comfort during your exploration. Reddit

While the upper parts of the site offer dramatic sea views, the lower sections provide a more intimate glimpse into the city's layout and public spaces. The temple ruins themselves are impressive, though some reviews suggest that maintenance could be improved, with information signage being outdated. Reddit

Best Times to Visit for an Optimal Experience

To make the most of your visit to the Temple of Apollo Smintheus, strategic timing is crucial. Many visitors strongly recommend arriving early in the morning, ideally around 8:30 AM. This allows you to experience the site with very few other people around, offering a more peaceful and immersive exploration. Reddit It also helps you avoid the intense heat, particularly during the summer months. Reddit

Late afternoon can also be a good time, especially if you're interested in photography. The golden hour before sunset provides beautiful lighting for capturing the ancient ruins against the backdrop of the Aegean Sea. However, be mindful of the closing time of 5 PM; arriving too late might not give you enough time to see everything. Reddit

August, in particular, can be extremely hot, making it almost impossible to finish seeing the whole site if you visit during the peak midday hours. Therefore, planning your visit for the cooler parts of the day is essential for a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Reddit
