Radana Toldyova

"The Binbirdirek Cistern, also known as the Cistern of Philoxenos, is a fascinating underground site in Istanbul. Built in the 4th century during Emperor Constantine I’s reign, it served as a water reservoir for the nearby Palace of Philoxenos . The cistern features 224 marble columns, each about 14 to 15 meters tall, arranged in 16 rows . The name “Binbirdirek” means “1001 columns” in Turkish, though it’s a figurative expression, as the actual number is 224 .

Over time, the cistern was forgotten and repurposed for various uses, including as a silk workshop during the Ottoman period . Today, it’s open to visitors, offering a glimpse into Byzantine engineering and the city’s rich history. "
