Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Villa Jeanneret-Perret Maison Blanche for its historical significance as Le Corbusier's first independent project and its meticulous restoration. The friendly staff and the opportunity to explore the entire building, including the attic and basement, are frequently highlighted as positive aspects. Some visitors note that while it's a fascinating glimpse into early modernism, it might not resonate as strongly as his later, more iconic works for those less familiar with architectural history.

"This was the second house to visit during my Saturday afternoon trip to La Chaux-de-Fonds mid February 2025. It was the first project Le Corbusier designed by himself and was for his parents, moving here in 1911, up on the northern slopes of town from the city center. They only stayed here till around 1919 when they moved to La villa du Lac on Lake Geneva in Corseaux, also drawn by their son. You are very warmly received, in contrast to if you visit La Villa du Lac. The building is carefully renovated after having been squatted for years, and you can admire furniture and even a grand piano designed by the architect. The wall paper has been recreated by a Belgian company and is really typical of its time. Highly recommended!!"

Sebastian Reiz

"Very interesting visit. Of course, it is not as brutal as the later buildings but it already shows the love to the detail.
You can visit the complete building including attic and basement. There is a study with lots of literature about Le Corbusier and also a video documentation in the basement. 10 CHF well spent... The building is in excellent condition and the staff is very friendly.
There are other nice buildings to see in the neighborhood - so plan a little extra time."

Markus Siebold

"Kept in excellent condition. The staff are very friendly and helpful with information regarding the house. Thoroughly enjoyed spending time here. Only perhaps the garden needs trees for shade as it used to be in the old photos."

Le Corbusier's Architectural Genesis

Villa Jeanneret-Perret, also known as Maison Blanche, stands as a pivotal early work by the legendary architect Le Corbusier. Built between 1911 and 1912, it was his first independent residential project, designed for his parents. This villa is a fascinating testament to his evolving architectural philosophy, predating his more famous 'machine for living' concepts but already hinting at the modernist principles he would later champion. The house's design, nestled on a hillside, utilizes innovative structural elements, resting on its exterior walls and four central pillars, a departure from traditional construction methods. Instagram+1

The interior of Maison Blanche is equally significant, featuring furniture and wallpaper designed by Le Corbusier himself. These elements offer a tangible connection to his design process and his holistic approach to architecture, where every detail, from the grand piano to the smallest fixture, was considered. The meticulous renovation of the villa has preserved these historical aspects, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience the domestic environment as it might have been. The villa's careful restoration after a period of being squatted highlights its importance as a cultural heritage site. Reddit
