"Situated in the Galle district, Thelwaththa village, this temple is famous by the name of Thotagamuwa Rajamaha Viharaya. Sccording to legends, the history of this temple dates back to the time of Vijayabhahu the first (1070-1110BC) of polonnaruwa period. Buildings of this temple have been damaged with the arrival of the Portuguese. During
the rule of king Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe (1780Bc) which was during the middle of the 18th century, with the lead of Waliwita Saranankara Thero , there was a revival in Buddhism. Due to this the temple was also revived.
Even though the temple has been revived, the value of the paintings here has not decreased, therefore it is still highly appreciated and has captured the public attention. Among the paintings here, Jayataka stories of Devadhamma Jathakaya, Khadirangara Jathakaya, Sama Jathakaya, Story of Dhammasondha, Sasa Jathakaya,Chulladhammapala Jathakaya, Vessantara Jathakaya, Enlightenment of the Buddha, The Sixth week after Enlightenment and “Diviyaloka” paintings of Tavatisma Diviyaloka, Yama Diviyaloka and Parinimitta Diviyaloka are seen."
