Pick a Landmark

When surfing, choose a landmark to swim back to, especially in strong currents. Instagram

North Jetty Beach in Nokomis Florida was hitting pretty hard Thursday afternoon as Hurricane Helene started roaring up the Gulf Coast of Florida! Big Shore Break = Big Rips ... remember to pick a landmark and come back in Safe! Oh! And definitely don't jump off North Jetty or even walk down the path past the Coastline! Even 3 inches of surge water over that walkway and your feet get swept out ...

Reviews Summary

North Jetty is celebrated for its powerful shore break, offering exciting surfing opportunities for experienced riders. While some find the local interactions less than friendly and advise seeking services further down the beach, others praise the instructors and good prices at specific surf schools. The break itself is a draw for its unique wave characteristics.

"It's the best place on a beach to learn how to surf. Very experienced teacher(20+ years). He is teaching you how become a very good surfer for sure. It's not just pushing you forward and say "up, up". It's more like real teaching stuff. Boards are soft and almost new."

Антон Скуратов

"Milan is the owner. He is excellent teacher - but they do not ‘market’ so it is difficult to find out about them. Hikkaduwa is normally a good place for beginners, but he said today the waves are too strong. The other places would take your money and let you have a bad experience. You can stay right at their guest house on the beach, have a coffee at the brother’s restaurant and then learn to surf. Doesn’t get better than that! And his English is good as well."

Deb Belcore

"People are not friendly there. They will ask for your money for every additional thing. The same about cafe next to surf school. I DO NOT recommend to use that school and service around. Better walk 100 meters farther and you will get much more better service"

Understanding the North Jetty Break

The North Jetty Surf Break is a renowned spot on Florida's Gulf Coast, particularly popular for its powerful and often challenging waves. Located near Venice and Nokomis, this break is characterized by its shore break nature, meaning the waves break very close to the shore. This creates a fast, hollow, and intense surfing experience that attracts experienced riders. The jetty itself acts as a natural wave shaper, contributing to the break's unique characteristics. This makes it a prime location for surfers seeking adrenaline-pumping action. However, the same power that makes it exciting also makes it potentially dangerous, especially for beginners. Instagram It's also advised to avoid jumping off the jetty or venturing too far past the coastline during periods of strong surge water. Instagram

Surf etiquette is vital for a harmonious experience. This includes respecting the right of way for surfers who are closer to the peak of the wave and avoiding 'dropping in' on someone else's wave. The local surf community at North Jetty is generally tight-knit, and understanding and adhering to these unwritten rules ensures a positive atmosphere for everyone. Reddit
