What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Bodega El Grifo for its brilliant and informative experience, highlighting the knowledgeable guides, fascinating history, and delicious wines. The unique volcanic vineyards and traditional winemaking methods are a significant draw, making it a memorable visit for both wine lovers and those new to wine. Some visitors noted that while the core experience is excellent, the focus remains on wine, which might be less engaging for very young children.
"Brilliant experience. I would recommend to anyone who loves, or even likes wine. My dad who is not a huge wine lover thoroughly enjoyed himself.
Our guide, Elena, was fantastic. She was friendly, knowledgeable, and totally committed. She explained things very well, it was clear and easy to understand her, and she'd graciously answer any questions asked. Her knowledge on the wine was brilliant as well; down to all of the nuances of flavour, ingredients, and techniques of manufacture.
Now, the place itself. The buildings, history, vineyards, everything. It is truly interesting and enjoyable to go through. So many interesting facts, equipment, and of course, delicious wine! It is a beautiful place with a lot of intrigue, so I will not spoil all of it, go find out for yourself!
Overall, it was a wonderful experience with friendly people, tasty wine, and well worth the price for the "Wine Lovers" tier. I recommend it 100%."

"We loved this tour. It was very informative and interactive. Lovely to walk out into the vineyard and see all the different stone protection through the ages, and to learn why the growing methods are changing. We tasted a lovely selection of wines, and we always find it fascinating to see how wines taste before and with food. Having the cheese and biscuits was, therefore, a great addition to the tasting experience. Definitely recommend and was a great birthday present. (Spent a bit on some wines in the shop on the way out :o)"

The History and Evolution of Bodega El Grifo
The vineyards themselves are a testament to resilience and adaptation. Due to Lanzarote's unique volcanic landscape and arid climate, traditional methods like planting vines in 'socos' (small craters filled with volcanic ash) and surrounding them with stone walls are crucial for survival. These practices protect the vines from wind and retain moisture. El Grifo is actively exploring new variations adapted to climate changes, demonstrating a forward-thinking approach to winemaking.
This blend of deep history and modern adaptation makes Bodega El Grifo a fascinating destination. It's a place where you can learn about the island's agricultural past, understand the challenges of winemaking in such an environment, and taste the results of centuries of dedication. The knowledgeable guides, like Elena, bring this history to life with engaging explanations.
Experiencing a Lanzarote Wine Tasting
Beyond just the wine, the tasting often includes local cheese and biscuits, a thoughtful addition that enhances the appreciation of the wines' nuances. This pairing is frequently mentioned as a great addition to the experience. Visitors can also purchase their favorite wines from the on-site shop, allowing them to take a taste of Lanzarote home.
For those who love wine, or even those who are just curious, the tasting at El Grifo is highly recommended. The guides are passionate and knowledgeable, making the experience enjoyable and educational. It's a perfect way to understand the unique terroir of Lanzarote and its impact on the wines produced.
