What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Gorafe Megalithic Park is lauded for its stunning, otherworldly desert landscapes and unique rock formations, often described as feeling like another planet. While the ancient dolmens are present, some visitors find them less impactful than the spectacular scenery. The rough, unpaved roads can be challenging, making a 4x4 vehicle advisable for full exploration.
"One of the best kept secrets in Spain, in all of Europe even! Such a unique landscape and microclimate, its one of those places that makes you feel like you’ve landed on another planet. The landscape is full of wild rock formations, deep canyons, and you'll also see ancient tombs (they call them 'dolmens') scattered around. Amazingly, I also encountered some species of deer (they were far away so not sure if they were deer or goats, or some other ungulate species) scrambling up the cliff walls.
There are lots of trails to explore, depending on whether one wants to walk/hike or drive. If driving, the popular trail is the one that leads to the beautiful Los Coloraos area, though the road there is rough and requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle and a bit of expertise with offroad driving.
And if hiking there are many trails varying in length - I did one from Puntal de Don Diego down to Fuente del Carrizal, which opens into a long trail along the floor of a canyon. If hiking in the summer months, this is important: make sure take lots of water (and food), as it gets quite hot and there is virtually no shade! Also, it's preferable to hike in the earlier part of the day before the heat reaches its peak.
Overall, it's one of the most unique and spectacular landscapes in spain, and it's surprising that it's not more popular."

"It seems that the place is not popular. The Megalithic structures, for me as an ordinary person, did not made any greate effect. But the place, the desert, is amazing. I had a great time driving in the nearby places, from panorama to panorama or other points I liked to see."

"Kind of interesting is how I would describe this attraction however once there you realise that the walk and the views are what this place is reall about. The graves/structures are a little underwhelming..."

Exploring the Megalithic Heritage
Understanding the context of these dolmens is key to appreciating them. They are not grand monuments but rather functional burial sites, often found scattered across the arid terrain. Their presence underscores the long history of human activity in this seemingly desolate area. For those interested in archaeology and ancient history, these sites provide a fascinating glimpse into early human societies.
The Unique Desert Landscape
Navigating this terrain can be an adventure in itself. While some areas are accessible by standard car, the popular Los Coloraos area requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle and some off-road driving expertise due to its rough roads. For hikers, trails vary from gentle walks to more challenging canyon explorations. Regardless of how you choose to explore, the dramatic scenery is a constant companion, making it a photographer's paradise.
Visiting during the cooler months of spring or autumn is highly recommended to fully enjoy the landscape without the intense summer heat. The desert's beauty is stark and captivating, offering a sense of isolation and wonder that is increasingly rare.
