What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Goya's Birthplace in Fuendetodos to be a charming and historically significant site, especially for dedicated Goya fans. The Grabados Museum is praised for its collection of etchings, and the birthplace offers a glimpse into humble origins. However, the remote location and strict siesta hours require careful planning.
"You have to go to the Grabados Museum first to buy your tickets! There is a tiny notice to the top right of the front door. The house itself is tiny and too small to accommodate an entrance desk.
As retired people our entrance ticket was to both museum and the house was only 2€. The etchings are like like those of Hogarth at the same epoch - dark and disturbing.
The house of his birth is small and rudimentary with an interesting bamboo insulation underneath the roof tiles.
The surrounding countryside is a strange collection of flat-topped hills and fields on one side around the Civil War torn town of Belchite and a moonscape of white chalk fields and hills returning to Zaragoza on the other."

I was in the way to another location so we decided to pay a visit .... remember spain is shut down in incredibly from 1pm to 3pm .... I can't understand well this , but it is what it is ."

Goya's Artistic Journey: From Birthplace to Masterpieces
While the birthplace itself is modest, it serves as a potent symbol of Goya's origins. The surrounding Aragonese countryside, with its unique geological formations like flat-topped hills and chalky 'moonscapes,' provides a distinctive backdrop to his early life. This environment, coupled with his early exposure to art and his subsequent studies, laid the foundation for a career that would span royal portraiture, tapestry cartoons, and deeply personal, often nightmarish, visions. The contrast between his simple beginnings and the monumental impact of his art is a central theme for visitors to Fuendetodos.
Navigating Fuendetodos: Practicalities for Visitors
Fuendetodos observes the traditional Spanish siesta, meaning most establishments, including potentially the museum and birthplace, will be closed between 1 PM and 3 PM. Therefore, timing your visit for the morning or late afternoon is essential to avoid disappointment. The town is located in a somewhat remote area, making driving the most practical mode of transport. While parking is generally available and free, ensure your navigation systems are up-to-date for the journey. The experience is enhanced by the unique, stark beauty of the Aragonese landscape surrounding the village.
