Cueva del Esplendor in Jardín, Colombia. The hike to Cueva del Esplendor in Jardín takes you through rolling coffee farms and cloud forest trails before leading to a cave where a 50 ft waterfall crashes straight through the roof. It’s about a 3–4 hour trek (or you can go by jeep and hike the last stretch), but the view of that waterfall pouring light into the cave is so worth it. Definitely the hi...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Cueva de los Verdes for its unique volcanic formations and the impressive 'auditorium' with its natural acoustics. The guided tours are highly valued for their informative content and multilingual delivery. However, the cave's challenging terrain, including low ceilings and uneven steps, makes it unsuitable for those with mobility issues.

"Booked as part of a full day island tour, the caves were amazing and was really nice to see the different rock formations. I highly recommend a visit the venue hall inside is a site to see also."

DrowzOnly

"Brilliant lava cave site with stunning features that are completely unique to lava formations as it cooled and formed the structures. There arent any facilities here other than the toilets and a vending machine for water bottles so be aware there isn't a cafe or shop. You also have to book your tickets in advance or you won't be able to get in. Admission is in 15 minute alots and you spend about 45-50 minutes in the cave itself. A guide takes you around and guides you through the site with a huge amount of knowledge and history. He delivers the tour in two languages simultaneously. The steps can be a bit tricky to navigate and many areas have incredible low ceilings so not recommended for anyone with mobility or back issues. They even warn you to not have your sunglasses on your head and backpacks made some areas tricky. But wrll worth a visit to see this incredible site."

Katherine Wilkins

"Sure, there are caves elsewhere that are far bigger, or more impressive, but these caves are lava shaped and the lighting is very well done. You have to buy your tickets online (but you can do that on spot), and the guided tours (no other way to explore the caves) start every 15 minutes, and last for about one hour."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Volcanic Origins of Cueva de los Verdes

Cueva de los Verdes is a spectacular example of a lava tube, formed by the eruption of the nearby La Corona volcano approximately 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. As molten lava flowed towards the sea, the outer layers cooled and solidified, creating a tunnel. The continuous flow of lava inside eventually drained away, leaving behind this impressive subterranean passage. The cave system is one of the longest known lava tubes in the world, extending for about 7 kilometers, with 1.5 kilometers accessible to the public. Instagram

This geological marvel is part of a larger volcanic complex that includes other attractions like Jameos del Agua. The unique formations within Cueva de los Verdes, such as stalactites and stalagmites formed from mineral deposits, are a testament to the slow geological processes that have occurred since the lava cooled. The cave's structure and the way it was formed are central to the guided tour experience, offering a vivid lesson in volcanology. Reddit

Visitors are often amazed by the sheer scale and the intricate details of the cave. The guided tour highlights the different stages of the lava flow and how the cave's unique features, like the 'backwaters' and the 'auditorium,' came to be. It's a journey through the earth's fiery past, brought to life by the knowledgeable guides. Reddit

Navigating the Cave: What to Expect

The experience inside Cueva de los Verdes is a guided tour, meaning you won't be wandering alone. This is crucial for safety and for appreciating the cave's features. Guides are multilingual and provide fascinating commentary on the cave's formation, history, and unique characteristics. They are adept at managing groups and ensuring everyone can see and hear. InstagramReddit

Be prepared for a physically engaging tour. The path involves numerous steps, some of which are quite steep, and several sections have very low ceilings, requiring visitors to duck or even crawl in places. This is why it's not recommended for individuals with mobility issues, back problems, or claustrophobia. Wearing sturdy, non-slip shoes is essential, and it's advisable to leave large backpacks at the entrance or at your accommodation. Reddit

The cave's natural beauty is enhanced by a clever lighting system that illuminates the volcanic rock formations, creating dramatic contrasts and highlighting the textures and colors. This lighting is carefully designed to showcase the geological wonders without being intrusive. The tour culminates in a surprising 'auditorium' with remarkable acoustics, often used for concerts and events, demonstrating the cave's dual role as a natural wonder and a cultural venue. Reddit
