What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
This parish has a history of being a vibrant and welcoming community, particularly noted for its active youth groups and engaging religious events. However, recent visitor experiences suggest potential issues with inconsistent opening hours and a less welcoming atmosphere compared to its past.
"From 1996 to 2000, I worked closely with Father Esteban Arrese. We formed a group of young people who were eager to live their faith and share it.
We revived the Stations of the Cross on the streets with the cross bearers. I borrowed drums from the nearby Civil Guard, and we went out along Calle Pi I Maragall, Calle Escorial, etc. The priest prayed from a car on a loudspeaker and greeted the neighbors.
On the feast day of Saint Charles Borroneo, we counted the street of Sant Luís and played games and sang songs to entertain the neighborhood children. We also formed a choir with guitars and sang at Saturday night Mass. We grew to have a very nice group of more than 30 young people and many less young people who were eager to do things, and it was a very lively parish. Until the decision to remove Father Esteban and bring in Father Cortina turned into a fiasco. Cortina, with his outlandish ideas, emptied the church, and Father Esteban was removed from the Church of the Holy Spirit. Shameful decisions... a shame. God only knows."

"Today, Sunday, I tried to enter the church, but the lady in charge literally slammed the door in my face. They close at 1:00 p.m. They denied us entry at 12:30 p.m.
I just wanted to pray to Saint Jude Thaddeus, and my husband mentioned it to her without a care. She calmly informed us of the opening hours. Then we complained about the lack of "users" in the churches. I'll return because it's a promise for my health, and I mentioned it to her. But nothing. Understanding and kindness were conspicuous by their absence. It made me feel terrible. It seemed like a business when it's closing time. The information on Google indicated that it was open during those hours. It's up to her conscience."

"It says it opens at 5 p.m. After waiting for 20 minutes, a lot of people come out. A very rude man says it opens at 7 p.m., but it might not even open. What a shame for Barcelona. There are thousands of churches in Rome. First, they keep to the schedule, and second, they're not that rude. That's how the church ended up."

A Look at Parish History and Community
However, the arrival of Father Josep Cortina in 2000 led to a shift in direction, causing a substantial portion of parishioners to leave. Later, under Episcopal Vicar Monsignor Jesús Sanz, efforts were made to recover the parish's community, though it was eventually grouped with Sant Miquel dels Sants, leading to a loss of its independent status. Despite these shifts, the church itself is described as a bright and pleasant space, though the recent removal of the Majestic Christ from the main altar has been noted by some.
Recent visitor experiences highlight a potential disconnect with current operating hours and a perceived lack of understanding from some staff members, contrasting with the historically welcoming atmosphere. The parish continues to host significant religious events, such as the Corpus Christi celebrations with processions and street decorations, and religious commemorations like Good Friday.
Community Events and Celebrations
Other significant religious observances include the commemoration of Good Friday, where the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ are remembered through liturgy. The parish also hosts events like the 'Dècim Festival Mar y Tierra' (Tenth Sea and Land Festival), which involves a carriage tour and community gathering, indicating a tradition of local festivals that bring people together.
The parish also nurtures its younger members through activities like catechesis masses, demonstrating a commitment to faith formation for all ages. The presence of an active choir, as seen in performances of 'Gloria,' further enriches the spiritual and cultural life of the parish.
