"Els Ports is a mountain massif in the extreme south of Catalonia. It's not particularly high by Spanish standards, with Mt Caro at 1,447 metres altitude, but it's really quite spectacular, beautiful, remote and difficult to access in part, and with some jaw-dropping scenery.
There are small rivers (more like streams in the summer, but they can really swell after heavy rains) with deeper pools where locals and tourists go to bathe. There are dry stone walls, almond and olive groves, some with some very gnarled, ancient trees, and towering vertical limestone crags and extensive pinewoods.
I used to visit the Ports regularly, especially from the direction of Horta Sant Joan, because I used to carry out bird censuses 4 times or more a year. I've also led bird tours here, mostly for Birding In Spain. It used to be easier to see Bonelli's Eagles, and there are some reasonably interesting Mediterranean birds such as Hoopoe, Bee-eater, Short-toed Treecreeper, Rock Bunting, Cirl Bunting, Firecrest and more. And of course Griffon Vultures galore.
Iberian Ibex can be very approachable here, often to the dismay of local farmers. Lots of hiking trails of different lengths and difficulty."

"The whole Parc natural is stunning! In the winter there is sometimes snow, especially on Mont Caro! Spring and autumn are the best times to go for walks. There are a lot of walking paths all over the Natural Parc, mostly with picnic areas and barbecue pits. In the tourist information in Roquetes you can get a map of the whole Parc Els Ports, leaflets with the individual walks and lots of information."
