What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
New Germany Nature Reserve is a free-to-enter gem offering enjoyable walks through grasslands and forests, with the highlight being potential encounters with friendly Grey Duikers. While the entrance and facilities are clean, outdated maps and the neglected state of the former aviary are noted drawbacks. It's a peaceful spot for a picnic and a short hike, best enjoyed during wildlife-active hours.
"Neglected entrance/ reception area but the trails were enjoyable. Entrance is Free and gates are open from 7:30am to 5pm daily. There are maps available free at reception however the maps are very outdated and not entirely readable.
In the past there was a lovely bird aviary which is now just a broken mess.
Facilities were clean with clean bathrooms and many picnic spots with braai facilities.
Trails were mostly neat and signposted with the exception of a few spots that may have been effected from recent floods. The loop trail is roughly 1600m that takes you through grasslands and small Forrest’s.
While walking we were visited by a Grey Duiker which was exceptionally friendly and filled alongside us for 5min."

"Was expecting to see a neat and well kept reserve, best part about the day out was the newly placed Road.
Definitely would not recommend going if you plan on seeing any animals as we did not even see a bird.
Disappointing to see how bad its become."

Wildlife Encounters: Patience is Key
While the reserve is praised for its potential wildlife sightings, some visitors have noted disappointment in not seeing animals, particularly birds, on certain visits. This highlights the unpredictable nature of wildlife observation. The interpretive education center (though not detailed in reviews) likely aims to provide information about the local fauna, which could enhance the visitor experience. The loop trail is a prime area for spotting animals, so taking your time and being observant as you traverse the grasslands and forests can lead to memorable encounters.

This makes it a great spot for a family outing or a relaxed day with friends. The parking lot is described as nice and safe, providing a secure place for your vehicle. Despite some areas needing attention, like the former aviary, the core experience of walking the trails and utilizing the picnic facilities is generally positive.
