What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the incredible wildlife sightings along the S28 and the unique river views from Lower Sabie Rest Camp, particularly the chance to see hippos and crocodiles. While some accommodations have quirky layouts and the on-site restaurant has limited options, the overall experience is highly positive, with many praising the camp's location and the abundance of animals.
"Our "tent"/bungalow had a terrace, a kitchen accessible from the terrace, and a bedroom with a bathroom, also accessible only via the terrace. The kitchen and the bedroom are not connected internally — only by this terrace. We didn’t use the kitchen, as it smelled strongly of (bat) urine, so we never opened the doors for a second time. The bedroom and bathroom were better. The bed linen and towels were clean, which we appreciated. No living animals or animal parts inside. The park's restaurant is Mugg & Beans, with only a limited selection of dishes on the menu and almost no vegetables. Vitamins are much needed when sitting in a car all day. The park shop is good, with a wide variety of products and souvenirs in stock."

"We booked a river view safari tent and we got upgraded to the big one I guess maybe because our was was dead in the bush. Yup our car was dead in the bush and we came with other cars to the reception area. We booked the sunset drive but could not make it in time and the staff were kind to let us move it to the morning drive instead. And because we did not have our car with us they even walked with us to our tent. The tent was perfect with a small kitchen on the side and the river view was nice."

"The stands are small, but have proper demarcation of each stand with water and dustbin. The shower cubicles are very small with no seating or place to put your bag and dry clothes. There is only one hook in each cubicle. There is no electric outlets on the ladies bathroom. The communal cooking area has a microwave which none of the other camps we stayed at had."

The S28: A Wildlife Corridor
Timing is crucial for maximizing your chances on the S28. Early mornings and late afternoons are when predators are most active, often on the move or hunting. The golden light during these hours also provides stunning photographic opportunities. Be patient, drive slowly, and keep your eyes peeled – you never know what might emerge from the bush.
While the S28 is a highlight, remember that wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. However, the sheer density of game often seen here makes it a consistently rewarding experience. Always adhere to park regulations, maintain a safe distance from animals, and enjoy the thrill of the wild.
Lower Sabie Rest Camp Experience
However, some accommodations have unique layouts, such as kitchens only accessible externally via a terrace, which some guests found inconvenient. The camp's restaurant, Mugg & Beans, is noted for its limited menu, leading many to recommend stocking up on groceries from the well-equipped camp shop for self-catering or braais.
Despite minor drawbacks in some units, the overall atmosphere and location of Lower Sabie are highly praised. The chance to witness wildlife from your doorstep and the convenience of the camp's amenities make it a memorable stay for many visitors. Booking well in advance, especially for river-view units, is essential.
Photography Tips for the S28
Timing and light are your best friends. The early morning and late afternoon 'golden hours' offer soft, warm light that enhances wildlife photos. Avoid midday sun, which can create harsh shadows and washed-out images. If you're shooting during midday, look for animals in shaded areas.
Don't forget to capture the landscape and atmosphere too. Wide-angle shots can convey the vastness of the Kruger landscape. Always have your camera ready; wildlife can appear unexpectedly. A tripod or monopod can be helpful for stability, especially in low light conditions.
