Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Abel Erasmus Pass for its absolutely spectacular and unique scenery, highlighting the multi-colored rock faces and panoramic Drakensberg views. However, many note that the road conditions can be poor, with significant potholes and safety concerns regarding falling rocks, detracting from the overall experience. The potential for litter at some viewpoints is also mentioned.

"Very scenic pass with some interesting history behind it and views of beautiful rock faces. The road is in good condition. There are curios for sale along the route. Please travel slowly and respectfully."

Gareth Preiss (XplorationSA)

"We have driven through Abel Erasmus Pass after leaving Greater Kruger National Park near Hoedspruit as part of our drive along the famous Panorama Route. From the north, the mountains are quite scenic, offering nice panoramic views and multi-colored rock face mountainsides, showing off their bright yellow, orange and other earth-tone shades on both sides of the Pass. We also enjoyed the nice sweeping river views as we approached and passed through the tunnel.

There are a few nice viewpoints to stop and have a look at the sweeping river views on the north and south side of the pass. Further, there are plenty of places to stop along the famous Panorama Route which starts just south of the Abel Erasmus Pass, going south in the direction of Graskop.

Note: Road conditions were the last time we made this drive, we didn't encounter many potholes.

Overall, we like the Abel Erasmus Pass and enjoy driving this longer route towards Hoedspruit for our safaris in the Greater Kruger National Park. However, if visitors are only planning to visit the Panorama Route for a single day trip, this is slightly out of the way and might not be worth the extra driving."

"I love this pass, really amazing moutain and vally view, but a lots of pothole, road was such a bad condition and rocks are falling down. It is not secure to pass, and you can not stop good view point, its very dangerous to stop. Thats why the pothos are not great. But worth to drive there, it is breathtaking scenery."
