Ramdas Panicher

"We paid 10 euros each as part of the two museum package. One part of the building is the National Museum of Slovenia and the other the Natural History Museum.

It's a good place to spend a couple of hours, especially if it's raining!

We spent alot of time initially looking and reading (in English) at the exhibits. They were all very interesting and I could have stayed longer, but my partner got bored and was virtually running to the exit. We did enjoy ourselves; well at least I did! And to top if off when we got out it was still raining!"

Paul Meagher

"A combined museum with historical part (from prehistory to medieval times) and natural history part. The main staircase is quite beautiful. There is a whole exhibition on world's oldest musical instrument. There was also a temporary exhibition on baroque with quite unique layout."

A Journey Through Slovenian History

The National Museum of Slovenia is the country's oldest museum, founded in 1821. It offers a comprehensive look into Slovenia's past, spanning from prehistoric times through antiquity, the medieval period, and up to modern history. The museum's collection is rich with artifacts that tell the story of the land and its people. Reddit

The building itself, a late 19th-century Neo-Renaissance structure, adds to the historical ambiance. Visitors can expect to see items like the Neanderthal flute, a significant find that pushes back the timeline of human musical expression, and a prehistoric dugout canoe from Lake Bohinj, illustrating early forms of transportation and life. The exhibits on the Roman city of Emona provide a fascinating connection to the region's classical heritage. Reddit

Many visitors find the historical section to be very informative, though some note that the Natural History Museum, which shares the premises, can be more immediately engaging for a broader audience. However, for those interested in delving deep into Slovenian heritage, the historical exhibits are a treasure trove of knowledge and artifacts. Reddit

Exploring the Shared Space: History and Nature

The National Museum of Slovenia shares its premises with the Slovenian Museum of Natural History, offering visitors a dual experience under one roof. This arrangement means you can transition from exploring ancient human history to discovering the natural world of Slovenia and beyond. Reddit

The natural history section is often cited as being particularly interesting, featuring a wide array of animals and natural specimens. This can be a great draw for families or anyone with an interest in zoology and the environment. While the historical exhibits require a deeper dive into reading descriptions, the natural history displays offer a more visually immediate and often captivating experience for many. Reddit

When planning your visit, consider purchasing a combined ticket that grants access to both museums. This is not only cost-effective but also allows you to seamlessly explore both facets of the collection without needing separate entry. It's a practical way to maximize your time and experience the breadth of what the institution offers. Reddit
