Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the beautiful hike through Mostnica Gorge, praising its stunning turquoise waters, unique rock formations, and the rewarding waterfall at the end. The trail is considered moderately challenging and family-friendly, offering a peaceful immersion in nature. Some minor drawbacks include the need for cash for entry fees and potentially uneven trail sections.

"Beautiful hike to the valley above the gorge. Bring cash for food at the restaurant above, plus there's a cash fee per person for the gorge(although nobody there to collect when we went). Fee parking at the base of the trail, or you could just walk from town. Trail is well maintained and not too steep until you get towards the end (before the big valley). We did not go all the way to the waterfall. It took just over an hour to get to the valley, and 40 mins to get back to our car."

"We would highly recommend this hike through the Mostnica Gorge!

Important Tip: Make sure to have cash money on you! At one point along the trail through the gorge, you'll need to pay an entrance fee of €4, and this can only be paid with cash. Don't get caught out – ensure you have small bills or coins, or you'll have to backtrack to an ATM!

We parked near Lake Bohinj and started walking towards Stara Fužina. Along the path, you'll find signs directing you towards the gorge. While there is also a parking area closer to the gorge itself, we enjoyed the pleasant walk up through the local streets – the choice is yours!

The gorge hike takes you through a beautiful forest, alongside the stunning gorge with its small rapids, all the way up to a charming waterfall. At a few points, the climb can be a little challenging, but overall, we would rate the hike as moderate. The views along the path are absolutely breathtaking, and we were fortunate to find there weren't many other visitors during our visit – just perfect for enjoying nature's tranquility.

We enjoyed this hike immensely and highly recommend it for anyone visiting the area!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Geological Marvel of Mostnica Gorge

Mostnica Gorge is a testament to the power of water erosion over millions of years. The Mostnica stream has carved a dramatic path through the limestone, creating a narrow, winding canyon with sheer rock walls. As you hike along the trail, you'll witness the intricate patterns and smooth surfaces sculpted by the relentless flow of water. The gorge is approximately 2 kilometers long, showcasing a variety of formations, from deep pools to narrow channels. Instagram

The surrounding landscape is equally captivating. The gorge is nestled within the Triglav National Park, Slovenia's only national park, known for its pristine natural beauty. The hike often leads you through lush forests, with the sound of the rushing water accompanying your journey. This combination of geological wonder and vibrant ecosystem makes Mostnica Gorge a truly special place to explore. Instagram

Beyond the main gorge, the trail can be extended to the impressive Mostnica Waterfall (Slap Voje). This extension adds to the overall experience, offering a different perspective of the area's natural beauty and a rewarding destination for hikers. The diverse landscapes encountered on this relatively short hike are a significant draw for visitors. Instagram

Hiking the Mostnica Gorge Trail

The hike through Mostnica Gorge is a popular activity for visitors to the Bohinj area. The trail is generally well-maintained, making it accessible for many. It begins near the Devil's Bridge and follows the Mostnica stream. The path can be uneven, with sections involving roots, stones, and steps, so wearing appropriate footwear is crucial. InstagramReddit

While the gorge section itself is about 2 km, many visitors choose to extend their hike to the Mostnica Waterfall (Slap Voje). This makes for a longer, more comprehensive experience, often described as a 4.5 km round trip. The trail offers a variety of scenery, from the intimate confines of the gorge to more open pastures and clear paths as you ascend towards the waterfall. InstagramReddit

Along the route, you'll find opportunities to rest and refuel at mountain huts or restaurants. These stops provide a chance to enjoy local refreshments and soak in the natural surroundings. Remember to carry cash for potential payments at these establishments and for the gorge entrance fee. Reddit

Planning Your Visit: Practicalities

Before embarking on your Mostnica Gorge adventure, a few practicalities are essential. The most frequently mentioned tip is the need for cash to pay the entrance fee, typically €4 per person. This ensures a smooth entry and avoids any last-minute detours to an ATM. Reddit

Footwear is another key consideration. The trail's nature—uneven, potentially slippery, and involving natural obstacles like roots and stones—necessitates sturdy, comfortable hiking shoes. This will enhance your safety and enjoyment throughout the hike. InstagramReddit

While the gorge itself is a highlight, consider extending your hike to the Mostnica Waterfall for a more complete experience. This adds distance but offers a greater variety of landscapes and a beautiful natural endpoint. Finally, be aware that some of the huts and restaurants along the way may also prefer or only accept cash payments. Reddit
