"I was in Novgorod in January and September 2019. I saw Volkhov once in January - during a trip to the Kremlin. The weather was cold, and even simply crossing the pedestrian Kremlin bridge seemed an impossible task. I only found out that Volkhov does not freeze in winter.
But in September I studied the river more closely: in addition to the excursion along the embankment, I took a boat ride to Lake Ilmen and even swam in Volkhov.
I was inspired to swim by the example of the boys who were swimming near the Kremlin walls. As it turned out later, there are enough “walruses” in Novgorod and they even have their own residence - a small red house not far from the pier.
When I went to Ilmen, the weather turned bad, but even the rain and wind did not affect my impressions. The lake turned out to be very close - 10-15 km. Excursion by boat - one hour. Costs 500 rubles. In summer the ship runs every hour depending on the load of tourists. On the road you will encounter the Rurik settlement, an unfinished bridge from the early 20th century, the Yuryev Monastery and Peryn. And then the ship goes out into the endless lake. Very interesting. We met a fisherman on a boat, which was built using 10th-century technology. That's what she looked like, anyway. It’s a pity that we missed him so quickly: we couldn’t take pictures."
