"The first stone church in Tambov and the oldest Orthodox cathedral in the Tambov region, the construction of which on the site of the ancient wooden Transfiguration Church began in 1694 during the lifetime of the patron saint of the city and the Tambov land, Saint Pitirim. The cathedral acquired its final features that have survived to this day in 1783. It has survived solely due to the fact that a local history museum operated here during Soviet times. The magnificent bell tower located nearby is a new replica. The historical bell tower from the early 19th century was destroyed during the Soviet hard times. The cathedral was returned to the church in 1993 and at that time it was a pitiful sight. Now the amazingly beautiful temple complex is a wonderful decoration of the city."
