Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Kazan Monastery for its beautiful architecture, particularly the unique 'Grisaille' paintings within the oldest temple and the impressive new bell tower. The large territory and proximity to the Tsna River embankment are also highlighted as enjoyable features. Some note that ongoing construction may affect the experience, but the historical significance and ongoing revival are appreciated.

"Beautiful architecture, many buildings, large territory. We were in the Kazan Cathedral inside, original painting of the walls and ceiling, beautiful icons. You can drink and collect holy water. On the territory of the monastery there are ancient monuments from the cemetery. You can see the embankment of the Tsna River. Not far away there is a descent to a beautifully landscaped embankment."

Оксана Радченко

"The Kazan Mother of God Monastery was founded in 1667 by the elder Joseph on the southern side of the city of Tambov. Due to fires that often broke out in the city of Tambov, the architectural appearance of the monastery changed several times. Its significant reconstruction took place in the middle of the 18th century. Two stone churches, Kazan and St. John the Baptist, have survived to this day. Like most monasteries during the Soviet era, it was turned into a maximum security camp where mass executions were carried out. In the following years, the necropolis was destroyed, the bell tower was destroyed. Later, a branch of the State Archives of the Tambov Region was located here. The revival of the monastery began in 1992.

Restoration work is currently underway. The construction of the theological seminary building is nearing completion, and the amazingly beautiful multi-tiered bell tower, more than 100 m high, is perhaps the most majestic new building I have ever seen."

"Cool! A very majestic bell tower. The seminary is quite large for such a small town. If you're passing through, stop by—you won't regret it."

A Rich History of Resilience

The Kazan Monastery, founded in 1667 by elder Joseph, has a long and complex history marked by change and resilience. Originally situated on the southern side of Tambov, its architectural appearance has been altered multiple times due to frequent city fires. A significant reconstruction in the mid-18th century led to the survival of two stone churches: Kazan and St. John the Baptist. Reddit

During the Soviet era, the monastery faced a dark period, being converted into a high-security camp where mass executions reportedly took place. The necropolis was destroyed, and the bell tower was demolished. Later, the site housed a branch of the State Archives of the Tambov Region. The monastery's revival began in 1992, marking a new chapter in its existence. Reddit

Today, restoration and construction are actively underway. The completion of the theological seminary building and the construction of a new, over 100-meter-high bell tower are significant developments. While the site is still evolving, it offers a compelling narrative of historical continuity and spiritual renewal.
