What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Peterhof for its breathtaking fountains, meticulously maintained gardens, and opulent palace interiors, calling it a 'must-see' and an 'expression of Russian Imperial splendor.' The sheer scale and beauty are overwhelming, though some find the palace interiors restrictive and the crowds can detract from the experience during peak times.
"This amazing Park and Palace is an expression of Russian Imperial splendor. It was built by Peter the Great as his summer palace. The site is listed as UNESCO World Heritage. As you cross the parking area there is a good handicrafts market, which actually is very good and you must go through while returning from the garden. I visited in early spring, Lush gardens are mesmerizing, with extravagant palace buildings, beautiful golden statues and a cascade of fountains. Vibrant flowers were everywhere in proper layout. At 1 PM, there is some musical show at the backdrop of the palace in front of the golden statues with fireworks and some performance. I visited the place on Saturday; I am not sure the show is daily or only on weekends. We were not able to catch the show as we were not aware of it earlier. We were at the farther end of the park at that time and we reached at the spot when the show was coming to an end, however I witnessed some closing fireworks. This is a must go venue, don’t miss it while visiting St Petersburg."

"This place is a must see, we had a great time and the weather was amazing. Prepare for long walk all around the park and lots of fountains perfect for the kids."

"Fable-like palace displaying the power and richness of the czars. The lavish interiors and the gigantic gardens with their water-plays are a testament to an era of nearly infinite wealth (for them of course not for the country). Impressive"

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
While the Grand Palace interiors might be less engaging for very young children, the sheer scale and beauty of the gardens and fountains can captivate them. The hydrofoil ride to Peterhof is also an adventure in itself, offering scenic views of the Gulf of Finland that kids often enjoy. Pack plenty of snacks and water, as exploring the vast grounds can be tiring.

The Engineering Marvel of Peterhof's Fountains
During the operational season (typically May to October), the fountains are turned on daily, with a grand ceremony for the Grand Cascade usually at 1 PM. This synchronized performance is a highlight for many visitors. It's important to note that the fountains are turned off during the winter months for preservation, so visiting outside this period means missing this spectacular aspect of Peterhof.
Beyond the Grand Cascade, the park is dotted with numerous other fountains, each with its unique design and charm. From playful water jets that surprise unsuspecting visitors to elegant statues spouting water, the sheer variety and scale of the fountain complex are astonishing. The entire system is a remarkable feat of engineering and a core reason why Peterhof is often called the 'Russian Versailles'.
A Glimpse into Imperial Life
Visitors can explore various state rooms, including the Throne Room and the Blue Drawing Room, each adorned with intricate details and historical artifacts. The palace's architecture and decor reflect different periods of Russian imperial history, from Peter the Great's initial vision to later Baroque and Neoclassical influences. Walking through these halls, one can imagine the grand balls, diplomatic receptions, and daily life of the tsars and their court.
While the palace interiors are impressive, the surrounding parkland is equally significant. The meticulously landscaped gardens, with their geometric patterns, statues, and secluded groves, were designed for leisure and entertainment. Exploring areas like the Lower Park, the Upper Garden, and the more intimate Monplaisir Palace provides a comprehensive understanding of the imperial lifestyle and the grandeur associated with the Russian monarchy.
Navigating Peterhof: Practicalities and Perspectives
Social media content often highlights the visual splendor, with many creators showcasing the iconic fountains and the palace's golden facade. However, Reddit discussions offer a more grounded perspective, with travelers sharing tips on managing crowds and maximizing their visit. For instance, some suggest visiting on weekdays to avoid the weekend rush, and booking tickets online to save time. The sheer number of visitors, especially during peak summer months, can be overwhelming, leading to long queues for tickets and entry into the palace.
Getting to Peterhof is also a key consideration. While hydrofoil is a popular and scenic option, buses and marshrutkas offer a more budget-friendly alternative. Understanding these transport options and factoring in travel time is crucial for a well-rounded visit. Some visitors also note that the experience can differ significantly between seasons, with the fountains being the main attraction in summer and a quieter, more serene atmosphere in winter.
