What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Saint Petersburg Flood Protection Dam a place of unique tourist potential, blending impressive modern engineering with historic forts. While restoration is ongoing and can limit access, the scenic sea excursions and the well-maintained 'Island of Forts' park offer enjoyable experiences. The strong winds are a notable factor for visitors to prepare for.
"A very interesting place in Kronstadt with a huge unique tourist potential. It was abandoned for many years, according to media reports, restoration work is currently underway. I would like to hope that this is really so. At least most of the fortifications are surrounded by a construction fence, but the activity of the restorers is not particularly visible. So far, only free access to the pier, from which an old two-deck motor ship of the "Moscow" project, built in the eighties of the last century at the Komarno shipyard in what was then Czechoslovakia specifically for the Soviet Union, departs for a sea excursion every hour. The territory of the Citadel fort was transferred to the "Island of Forts" park, which raises certain concerns in me. All three open stages of the park are almost entirely new construction, although to give credit to the well-maintained territory. In any case, this is a great location near St. Petersburg to spend a wonderful day with family and loved ones"

"The view of the fort from the water is magnificent. It's a shame it's now closed and you can't see inside. You can only get up close if you take a fort tour (I highly recommend this tour; everyone who went with me loved it. The guide gives a very engaging and detailed history of the forts and Kronstadt)."

The History and Purpose of the Dam
Historically, Kronstadt itself was established by Peter the Great as a naval fortress to defend St. Petersburg. The forts surrounding the area, including the Citadel Fort (Peter I), played crucial roles in the defense of the Gulf of Finland. The 'Citadel' fort, named 'Peter I' in 1834, was built to protect ships in the Merchant Harbor from sea-based attacks. The ongoing restoration efforts aim to preserve these historical structures while integrating them into the modern landscape, creating a unique blend of military history and engineering prowess.
Exploring the Forts and Their Restoration
Restoration work is a significant aspect of the current visitor experience. While some areas are still in a state of disrepair or are fenced off, the 'Island of Forts' park showcases a more developed and maintained environment. Visitors often express a mix of hope and concern regarding the restoration, appreciating the efforts to preserve heritage while noting the visible progress (or lack thereof) of the work. Taking a guided tour is highly recommended, as guides provide in-depth historical context and stories that bring the forts to life, even if direct access is limited.
