Reviews Summary

Old Torg is a public square in Kaluga, primarily recognized for its monuments to Ivan III and Vladimir Lenin. Visitors note the historical significance of both figures, with discussions often revolving around the appropriateness and placement of these statues. The square's potential for urban renewal and its proximity to the Oka River are also points of interest.

"The monument to Ivan III against the backdrop of the regional administration. It was installed in 2017. Before Ivan III, this place was occupied by V.I. Lenin. He was moved to his former place in the park nearby. The monument to Lenin turned 100 years old in 2024. This is one of the first monuments to Lenin in the country, brought from St. Petersburg and becoming a "twin" of the monument in front of Smolny. Although Lenin is now probably much better off in the park than in the noisy square. The tsar lost to the leader with the installation site, he is much younger, and he clearly lacks Lenin's monumentality."

"The monument to the Grand Duke of Moscow was erected on the Old Market Square in front of the regional administration building in 2017. I have no doubts about the appropriateness of erecting a monument to this man, since his role and place in Russian history are significant. It is surprising that the monument first appeared only so recently... Why in Kaluga? Because of the standing on the Ugra nearby, which is considered the end of the yoke. I have doubts about the reality of this event, as well as about the reality of the Battle of Kulikovo. The location of the monument in front of the main regional building, which does not evoke the best associations of Soviet times, is questionable. Only Lenin can stand in front of such a building. The image in which Ivan is depicted is questionable - the image of an epic hero with a staff and an eagle on its tip. I do not have such an association. On the monument to the 1000th anniversary of Russia in Veliky Novgorod, Ivan seems more credible and recognizable to me."

"The monument is fine, but in the rush to follow the "trend," who will they put up next?
Maybe we shouldn't demolish the old ones, and instead find new locations for the new ones?"

The Monuments of Old Torg: A Historical Dialogue

Old Torg (Stary Torg) in Kaluga is a public square that has become a focal point for historical commemoration, primarily through its prominent monuments. The most recent addition is the monument to Ivan III, erected in 2017. This monument honors the Grand Duke of Moscow, whose reign was significant for consolidating Russian lands and ending the Tatar-Mongol yoke, a pivotal event often associated with the nearby Ugra River stand. The placement of this monument in front of the regional administration building has sparked discussion, with some finding it a fitting tribute to a key figure in Russian history.Reddit

Contrasting with the modern Ivan III monument is the monument to Vladimir Lenin. Originally occupying the central position in the square, it was relocated to a nearby park. This monument is notable for being one of the earliest erected in Russia, dating back to 1924, and is considered a 'twin' of the monument in front of the Smolny Institute in St. Petersburg.Reddit The relocation of the Lenin monument has been viewed by some as a move that benefits the monument itself, placing it in a quieter setting away from the bustle of the main square.Reddit The juxtaposition of these two historical figures in close proximity offers a unique perspective on Russia's evolving historical narrative and public memory.

Potential for Urban Renewal

The discussions surrounding Old Torg extend beyond its current monuments to its potential future as a public space. Some visitors and locals have suggested transforming the square into a more vibrant and pedestrian-friendly area. Ideas include creating a pedestrian zone that integrates with a park and potentially a shopping mall, enhancing the recreational value for city residents.Reddit

Suggestions for improving the aesthetic appeal include paving the road with cobblestones and planting trees, which could create an 'excellent recreational area'.Reddit These proposals highlight a desire to reimagine Old Torg not just as a site of historical markers, but as a dynamic urban hub that balances historical significance with modern community needs and enjoyment. The proximity to the Oka River descent also offers opportunities for scenic integration and expanded public access to the waterfront.
