"The monument to O.I. Gorodovikov is the finest sculpture in Kalmykia. Erected in 1976, it has become the main symbol of Elista, much like the Motherland Monument on Mamayev Kurgan is for Volgograd. It is the work of talented Kalmyk artists: architect V.T. Nimgirov, sculptors N.A. Sandzhiev, and the Roberman brothers Lev and Mark.
The location was also well chosen. The monument boasted ample space, making it stand out from the landscape. Perhaps this was the architect's intention. Unfortunately, in the early 21st century, the southern side, where the rider's gaze would be directed, was built up, marring the overall impression."
