"Today, October 23, 2024, we took a walk through the forest 🌳 and reached a wonderful and beautiful place called Dry Canyon 🪵🌲
💥Psakho Dry Canyon is a one-day hiking trail in Sochi National Park, one of the most beautiful and unique in its origins.
☄️It is believed to have formed approximately 150 million years ago, when these lands were the bottom of the ancient Tethys Ocean. The rift formed as a result of the movement of tectonic plates that form the ocean floor. Over millions of years, rocks rose, and a river flowed through the canyon. Over time, the river found a different path, and the canyon became dry.
⚡️Evidence that this was once the ocean floor remains to this day: fossilized imprints of sea mollusks and shells have been discovered here.
✨A very interesting and beautiful place, and most importantly, easily accessible, without difficult climbs and descents 💫"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
Geological Wonders of Psakho Canyon
The formation of the canyon is attributed to the movement of tectonic plates. Over eons, these movements caused the ocean floor to rise, and a river carved its path through the landscape. Eventually, the river shifted its course, leaving behind the dry, dramatic formations that characterize this part of the canyon.
In contrast, the Wet Canyon is shaped by the active Psakho River, which flows through it, creating a vibrant, living landscape. The juxtaposition of the ancient, dry formations and the dynamic, wet canyon offers a comprehensive geological experience for visitors. The sheer scale and history etched into the rocks are truly awe-inspiring.
Navigating Psakho Canyon: Practicalities and Safety
Weather is a critical factor. The canyon can transform rapidly, with flash floods posing a significant risk. It's essential to check the forecast before your visit and be vigilant during your exploration. If you notice the water level rising or hear thunder, it's crucial to exit the canyon promptly and seek higher ground.
While the canyon is accessible for independent exploration, some sections can be challenging, particularly for those with very young children. Adults may need to provide assistance. The cafe near the river offers a place to rest, but always prioritize safety and be aware of the changing river conditions. Being prepared ensures a more enjoyable and safer adventure.
The Unique Subtropical Ecosystem
Visitors can marvel at a variety of flowers, mosses, and ferns that grow directly on the rocks, creating a visually stunning and almost surreal landscape. This vibrant greenery contrasts beautifully with the pale, ancient rock formations, making the canyon a photographer's delight.
The presence of these plants is a clear indicator of the region's unique climate, offering a glimpse into a delicate ecosystem that is both beautiful and ecologically significant. It's a reminder of nature's resilience and ability to flourish in unexpected places.
