Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Orthodox Cathedral for its historical significance as the coronation site of Romanian royalty and its beautiful Romanian architecture that complements the Alba Iulia Citadel. The well-maintained grounds, impressive bell tower, and free entry are frequently highlighted as positives.

"Built in just one year (1921–1922) specifically for the coronation of King Ferdinand I and Queen Marie as sovereigns of Greater Romania on 15 October 1922, this Orthodox cathedral is literally the place where modern Romania was crowned.
The whole ceremony took place right here, inside these golden walls – you can feel the history in the air.

Byzantine-Romanian style, huge golden mosaics, shining gold, impressive domes, and that massive bell tower that dominates the Alba Carolina Citadel.
Inside it’s warm, luminous, full of icons and frescoes that make you stop and stare. The royal thrones are still there, and the energy is incredibly powerful.

I always get goosebumps here, it’s solemn but also joyful, like the soul of Romania is celebrating.
Perfect light in the afternoon, and the whole citadel around it makes the visit even more special."

Patrizia Iginia Palazzini

"Full of history, beautiful place, lots to do and places to eat."

Susan Downham

"Magnificent exterior and beautiful grounds, especially on a sunny evening as a priest walks round beating a plank of wood with a stick. The bell tower over the gate is particularly impressive. During the evening prayer service there is a bit of a PA system clash with the Catholic Church next door."
