What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Real Companhia Velha for its historical significance as the oldest port producer, offering informative tours and excellent value tastings. The premium experience, including four wines and museum entry, is frequently highlighted as a worthwhile investment. While some find the tours a bit short, the quality of the wine and the reasonable prices in the shop are consistently appreciated.
"We took the "premium" 20 euro tour. I think I was well worth the money. The tour is short, they only take you to two rooms, but the most important thing is that they explain the process of wine making and we could ask many questions since our group was small. Then we tasted 4 wines which were really good and our ticket also included a free entrance to the museum, about 1 km away, where they also gave us a glass of wine after the visit. I definitely recomend this place."

"Read some reviews before booking. A few bad, must have been to a different place!
All the so called experts missed this one!
Did the €20 premium experience. Guide good. Tour of cellars, bottle museum, then 4 glasses to try. Price in shop was reasonable. It's the oldest port wine house here. Felt we had a better experience than others charging more."

The Art of Port Wine Tasting
The tasting itself is a highlight, typically featuring four different types of Port. This allows you to compare and contrast the nuances between styles like Ruby, Tawny, and Vintage Ports. Pay attention to the color, aroma, and flavor profile of each wine. Many visitors find the 10-year-old and 20-year-old Tawny Ports particularly impressive. The experience is enhanced by the historic setting of the cellars, where the wine matures for years.
Beyond the tasting, your ticket often includes free entry to the company's museum, located about a kilometer away. This museum provides further insight into the history of Port wine and the company's legacy, often including a complimentary glass of wine upon visit. This comprehensive approach makes a visit to Real Companhia Velha a truly enriching experience for any wine enthusiast.
Navigating Vila Nova de Gaia's Port Lodges
When exploring Gaia, you'll notice a high concentration of Port houses along the riverfront. It's easy to spend a day hopping between them, sampling different styles and learning about their unique histories. Some popular alternatives or complementary visits include Graham's, known for its stunning views and quality tastings, and Taylor's, which offers a well-structured self-paced tour. However, for those seeking a more intimate, family-owned feel, smaller cellars like Augusto's are also recommended.
For visitors who prefer to taste without a formal tour, options like the Wines of Portugal Tasting Room or wine bars such as Cave Bombarda offer a more flexible approach. Regardless of your preference, the sheer density of Port wine experiences in Gaia makes it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in wine and Portuguese culture.
