What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the PR1 Vereda do Areeiro for its breathtaking mountain scenery and the surreal experience of hiking above the clouds. The sunrise and sunset views are particularly highlighted as unforgettable. However, many note the trail's challenging nature, potential for crowds, and the frustration of partial closures due to landslides, which can impact the full hiking experience.
"We went to watch the sunrise rise which was our highlight. The walk our guide said was quite. I found it very busy but I am used to being in much quieter hikes. Since Aug 2024 there was a landslide and the full walk is now blocked so you walk down the staircase to look back at it and walk all the way back. The scenery was spectacular and we had a really nice, sunny warm day for the walk which made the day. I wouldn't have enjoyed it if it was wet and cold!
I've put 4 stars only because the full hike is closed."

"We went for a sunrise hike on a Saturday, showed up a little before 7am and the parking situation was crazy. Police blocked the road to the top and hundreds of cars were parking in the remote lot but there were only 2 parking ticket machines. We waited 45 min in line to pay for parking before an official came over and said we could pay afterwards. By the time we walked up we just missed sun rise 🤣 ( I added a Pic of the parking lot and the lineup for parking tickets in case you think I'm exaggerating. )
The short section of the hike that is open is very nice but the amount of people is a little overwhelming at times. Overall, I'd recommend this one but if you're planning to go for sun rise, go very early!"

Navigating the PR1 Vereda do Areeiro Trail
Due to its challenging nature, the hike is often described as strenuous and is not recommended for those with a fear of heights or a low level of fitness. However, the rewards are immense, with breathtaking panoramic views of the island's rugged interior and the chance to walk above a sea of clouds on clear days. Many visitors opt to hike from Pico do Areeiro towards Pico Ruivo and then return, or vice versa.
Important Note: The trail has experienced closures due to landslides and fires, notably since August 2024. Always check the latest trail status before planning your hike. Even when partially closed, accessible sections can still offer incredible experiences.
Sunrise and Sunset Experiences
Be prepared for crowds if you opt for these popular times. The parking lot can become congested, and there can be long queues for the parking ticket machines. Some visitors have reported waiting up to 45 minutes just to pay for parking. For a more relaxed experience, consider visiting on a weekday or exploring alternative viewpoints on the island.
If you plan to catch a sunset or sunrise, remember to bring a head torch for safe navigation in the dark. Dressing in layers is also crucial, as temperatures can drop significantly at these altitudes, even on a sunny day.
Trail Conditions and Safety
Given the exposure to the elements, sunscreen and a hat are vital, even on cloudy days, as you'll be hiking above the cloud layer. Staying hydrated is paramount; carry ample water, as there are no water sources along the trail. Bringing energy-rich snacks is also recommended to maintain your stamina throughout the hike.
Safety is key. Always inform someone of your hiking plans, check the weather forecast, and be aware of your surroundings. If the trail is closed or conditions are poor, do not attempt to hike. Consider hiking with a companion or joining a guided tour for added safety and support.
