What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Pico do Arieiro is lauded for its breathtaking, otherworldly views, especially during sunrise when you can stand above the clouds. Visitors rave about the magical atmosphere and stunning landscapes. However, be prepared for significant crowds at sunrise and potentially challenging weather conditions, including cold temperatures and wind.
"Madeira offers several spectacular spots to watch the sunset or sunrise, and Pico do Arieiro is undoubtedly among the best. At an altitude of 1,810 meters, you're surrounded by clouds. This magical atmosphere feels almost otherworldly. The breathtaking views will make you forget your everyday worries, as you're swept away by nature’s raw beauty and challenged by its whims—especially the wind.
Before you go, check the weather forecast for the area and come prepared: bring a warm coat, a hat, and hiking shoes if you would like to go outside most basic spot. Also it is really cold after sunset. Also, bring your water/food as later the day, shop may be closed. If you're feeling slightly adventurous, try a short hike to Ninho da Manta, or take on the more demanding Stairway to Heaven trail before sunset. Views are amazing. In is recomended to come at least 45 minutes before sunset to find rigt spot - the more you will come down the road the less tourists be there in your photos. But even photos from parking spot are breathtaking.
Alternatively, if you're not the romantic type waiting for sunrise or sunset, but rather someone seeking adventure and challenge, consider hiking all the way to Pico Ruivo, the Madeira's highest peak or other hikes. But read abou it before and be prepared..."

"Incredibly beautiful place for a sunrise and hike, but most of the hike is CLOSED indefinitely due to wildfires. The first 1.5km or so is open but after that it is closed with a €2500 fine for anyone who tries to hike it despite the closure. There is a €3 charge to hike the trail. Car parking is tough in the morning so be sure to get up early if you are aiming for sunrise. Nonetheless this is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been."

"Great view to see the sunrise. We where in place about 5.30 in the morning still found parking spots near the entrance. Its better to go early. The views are breath taking. P.S. the parking is a bit expensive"

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
For families, consider visiting during the day rather than for sunrise to avoid the extreme crowds and early wake-up calls. A short, easy walk to the Ninho da Manta viewpoint is a good option for little legs. Remember to pack plenty of snacks and water, and dress everyone in warm layers, as mountain weather is unpredictable. Be mindful of steep drops and narrow paths if exploring beyond the main viewing area.
🚶 Hikers and Adventurers
Be prepared for a strenuous trek with significant elevation changes. Proper hiking shoes, ample water, and snacks are essential. Always check trail conditions before you go, as closures can occur. For a less intense but still rewarding experience, explore the shorter trails to viewpoints like Ninho da Manta.
📸 Photographers
To capture the best images, arrive early to scout locations and avoid crowds. A wide-angle lens is recommended for the expansive vistas. Consider bringing a tripod for low-light conditions. Even during the day, the unique geological formations and ever-changing weather patterns offer compelling photographic subjects.
