What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Alto Golf is praised for its impeccably maintained fairways and greens, offering a challenging yet enjoyable round with its classic Cotton layout and undulating terrain. While the course conditions receive high marks, some visitors note disorganization in booking, limited buggy availability, and occasional unfriendly interactions with local members.
"I played the course in mid August and was impressed with the conditions I found the course in, fairways and greens were in pristine condition. It is a typical Cotton layout with generous and ondulated fairways playing mostly into elevated greens. The course is playing not too difficult for the experienced player but given the missing hole layout descriptions, buying a caddie book is advisable. Booking a teetime online went smooth, only the buggy had to be arranged locally. Taylor Made Q10 rental clubs were in near new condition and the reception staff was rather forthcoming. Sundowner greenfee of €36 (plus rental clubs and buggy) made it an enjoyable break very hot August afternoon. The course was near empty and I finished the round in under two hours."

"Fantastic course, my favourite in algarve, Greens not too fast, plenty of trees and narrow fairways keep it exciting, lady was lovely at the desk, lovely pint at the end, great view on the 18th, will return,"

"Easy reachable from Portimao, club house reception is right where uber drops you. Has all the basic essentials, clothing, caps, balls tees towels shoes etc. The bar has all essential drinks, water, juice sodadrinks beer and sportsdrinks. And few snacks.
The course is very slopy and quiet easy straight forward with some bunkers. Only three holes had a water difficultie. One at the side and one which is at the back of the green and also teeing over the water. Which was fun. Also ringing the bell (not everyone did it) The greens were well maintained (during july) as the fairways. Also very slopy not very forgiving and made it bit challenging. Greenkeepers also very professional, spotted me from far. Hide until i putted. Class
Only downsides: Many constructions nearby, for buildings.
The local clubmbers were a bit of rude. Cut in line at the clubhouse and pretended not to understand you, talk loudly at course and practice area. The tourist players were somehow much nicer."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider booking a buggy if you have family members who prefer not to walk long distances, though availability can be an issue. For families looking for a more diverse range of activities, exploring nearby towns like Portimão or Carvoeiro, which offer beaches and other attractions, might be a better option.
💰 Budget Travelers
Consider skipping the buggy rental if you're comfortable with walking and the terrain. This saves on additional costs. Bringing your own snacks and drinks, or purchasing them from local supermarkets before heading to the course, can also help manage food expenses. While the club offers rental clubs, if you plan on playing multiple rounds, bringing your own might be more economical in the long run.
🏌️ Golf Enthusiasts
For those looking to play multiple courses, Alto Golf is part of the Pestana Golf Resorts network, offering access to other notable courses in the Algarve like Silves and Vale da Pinta. This provides an excellent opportunity for a comprehensive golf holiday experience. Be prepared for potential disorganization with buggy and club rentals, and consider booking these well in advance.

Navigating the Terrain: Alto Golf's Slopes
The slopy nature of the course can also impact ball roll and approach shots. Players need to be aware of uphill and downhill putts, as well as shots that might be affected by the slope of the fairway. While this adds to the strategic depth of the game, it's something to be prepared for, especially if you're not accustomed to playing on such varied ground. The greenkeepers are noted as professional, ensuring the course remains playable despite its challenging topography.
Despite the physical demands, the unique layout is a major draw for golfers seeking a different kind of challenge. The reward for navigating the slopes is often a well-positioned approach shot to an elevated green, offering a satisfying golfing experience.
The Alto Golf Experience: Beyond the Greens
The rental club and buggy situation is a recurring theme in reviews. While rental clubs are available and often in good condition, the availability of buggies can be a significant issue. Many visitors expect to rent a buggy for a more relaxed round, and the limited number can lead to disappointment and the necessity of walking the course. This disorganization in booking and availability is a point of constructive criticism for the club's management.
Despite these operational hiccups, the course conditions themselves are consistently praised. The pristine fairways and greens, coupled with the engaging layout, ensure that the golfing aspect of the visit is highly enjoyable for most. The scenic 18th hole, offering a pleasant view, provides a memorable conclusion to the round.
Pestana Golf Resorts: A Network of Courses
The benefit of this network is the ability to experience different course designs and challenges within the same resort umbrella. For instance, Silves, Alto, Gramacho, and Vale da Pinta are mentioned as courses played by visitors to the Algarve. This allows golfers to tailor their itinerary based on their preferences, whether they seek challenging layouts, scenic views, or specific course conditions.
When booking through Pestana Golf Resorts, travelers can often find attractive deals, such as unlimited golf for a set price. This integrated approach to golf tourism aims to provide a comprehensive and convenient experience for enthusiasts visiting the Algarve region.
