What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Peniche Municipal Market is praised for its vibrant atmosphere and the availability of incredibly fresh produce and seafood. However, some visitors caution that tourists may encounter inflated prices, advising careful price comparison and confirmation before purchasing.
"Amazing local market. Best prices. Atmosphere."
Tim Dolton
"Be careful! Tourists are treated unfairly here. Be careful!
I bought 4 kg of fish (sea bass and sole) for 103 euros — 2–3 times higher than the normal price.
There were no price tags at the stall. The sellers gave prices "by eye" and only issued a receipt after inflating the cost.
I LOVE PORTUGAL and often visit Peniche and truly love this city, so it was very upsetting that my trust as a tourist was taken advantage of.
This is not a good experience and gives a bad impression of the attitude some locals have towards visitors.
Advice:
Never buy without seeing a clear price tag.
Always ask for the price per kilo: "Qual é o lokal preço por quilo?"
Compare prices at several stalls before buying.
It's a shame that such situations spoil the experience of such a beautiful city that deserves respect and honesty."

"Great food market. Mainly vegetables, fish and meat. We found amazing (almost bulgarian) tomatoes. You recognize them by the intense red color (some green spots) and the smell.
So there is some home production as the mainstream. Outside are trucks on the parking, selling mostly large quantities, of course not much home grown"

Navigating Market Prices
It's also highly recommended to compare prices across different stalls before committing to a purchase. This practice ensures you're getting a fair deal and can help you identify the best value for your money. While the market offers incredible freshness, a little vigilance can go a long way in ensuring a positive shopping experience.
Most vendors operate on a cash-only basis, so it's wise to carry sufficient cash with you. While some larger stalls might accept cards, relying on this can be risky. Being prepared with cash will make your transactions smoother and allow you to fully enjoy the market's offerings.
The Weekend Market Experience
For the best selection, especially for seafood, arriving in the early morning hours is highly recommended. This is when the fish stalls are brimming with the freshest catches from local fishermen. The produce section is equally appealing, with colorful displays of fruits and vegetables, some of which are noted for their exceptional flavor and aroma, like the intensely red tomatoes.
While the market is a fantastic place to experience local culture and find quality goods, it's also a reminder of the importance of mindful shopping. By being aware of pricing and comparing options, visitors can ensure they have a rewarding and authentic market experience.
