The imposing belfry and traditional Romanesque roofing are also noted as highlights. The surrounding historical village adds to the charm of the visit.
"From far you will notice already the mighty belfry of Igreja de Sao Leonardo. Rectangular in shape, its verticalness interrupted only by two horizontal cornices, harbours in the attic two large church bells. The Igreja de Sao Leonardo is one of the churches in Portugal with a very special vibe. We (my wife and I) as architects immediately felt it after had entered this beautiful building. Somehow the proportions are just right and we believe this is the reason why there's hardly any annoying echo found. We liked the simple but very pleasing details, like the stonework framing doors and windows. The huge whale bone adds an odd, but knowing the history of Atouguia da Baleia a sensible part to the interiors. One nice detail at the exterior is the traditional Romanesque roofing by using the tegulae (flat tiles) and covered with imbrices (semi-circular ones covering the joint between the tegulaes).
P.S.: We were lucky that the Igreja de Sao Leonardo later opened for a choir rehearsal."
