Communist Slim Aarons The municipal tide pool of Leça da Palmeira was opened in the 1960s to the designs of a 26 year old Architect (he is still a member of the Portuguese Communist Party). I knew nothing at 26, yet this guy had already completed one of his masterpieces (edit: it was completed when he was 33 thanks @baau_arquitectura ). Visitors rave about the unique architectural design and the exhilarating experience of swimming in tidal saltwater pools. The stunning ocean views are a major draw, offering a refreshing escape from typical beach or hotel pools. However, some find the water quite cold, and sunbeds come with an extra rental fee.

I’d recommend coming early to get a chance at a sunbed.
The food is basic but satisfying."

Havva Gulliet

"A truly unique swimming experience! 🏖️
Nestled among the rocks by the sea, this saltwater pool offers the feeling of swimming in the ocean — but in a calm and safe environment. The view of the Atlantic is incredible, and the natural setting makes it feel special and refreshing.

Perfect for a sunny day in Porto, and definitely a spot worth visiting if you're looking for something different from a typical beach or hotel pool."

Alfred Ng

"visited on a thursday 10am-ish in the end of august and almost froze to death both outside and inside the pool
parasols and sun beds are available for rental, and come before 11am if you want to reserve a spot in the sun bed area but honestly it's too cold so just bring a big towel and lie on the sands
was going to get the tickets online but the card payment was unavailable so just got them at the office, everything went smooth"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Architectural Marvel: Álvaro Siza Vieira's Vision

The Leça da Palmeira Tidal Pools, or Piscina das Marés, are a testament to the genius of Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. Designed in the 1960s, these pools are not just a place to swim but a significant piece of modernist architecture that harmoniously integrates with the rugged Atlantic coastline. Siza Vieira's design cleverly uses the natural landscape, allowing the ocean's waves to flow into the pools, creating a unique tidal swimming experience. Instagram+2

The structures, including the changing rooms and the pool basins, are characterized by clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic, typical of Siza Vieira's style. The pools were built between 1961 and 1966, and despite their age, they remain a striking example of how architecture can interact with nature. Visitors often marvel at how the concrete structures stand against the powerful ocean, creating a dramatic and beautiful contrast. Instagram

This project is considered one of Siza Vieira's early masterpieces and a key work in understanding his architectural philosophy. The way the pools are positioned to capture the sea breeze and the ocean views adds to their appeal, making them a destination for both architecture enthusiasts and those seeking a unique seaside experience. The Tidal Swimming Experience

Swimming in the Leça da Palmeira Tidal Pools offers a sensation unlike any other. Unlike a typical swimming pool, these are saltwater pools that are naturally filled by the ocean's tides. This means you get the refreshing feel of the sea without the unpredictable currents and undertows of the open ocean. Reddit+1

When the waves are strong, they can crash over the edges of the pools, creating a dynamic and exhilarating swimming environment. This connection to the sea is a major draw for visitors, offering a chance to feel the power of the Atlantic in a controlled setting. However, it's important to note that the water temperature can be quite cold, even during warmer months, so be prepared for a bracing dip! Reddit+1

Beyond the swimming itself, the setting is incredibly picturesque. Surrounded by rocks and with unobstructed views of the vast Atlantic, it's a perfect spot to relax, sunbathe, and enjoy the coastal scenery. The basic food offerings at the onsite bar are a simple addition to the overall experience. Reddit
