"A small but very interesting museum, at the firs floor of Peter Café Sport. For just 2.5 euros a person will accompany you up the stairs and answer all your questions about the collection. The collection includes hundreds of spermwhales' teeth engraved with black ink ("scrimshaw"), some of which date back to the XIX century. The subjects range from marine life scenes (whale hunting for example) to portraits of common people or famous persons. There are also very beatiful objects or jewels made in ivory, an engraved walrus tusk, engraved hyppoes teeth, a narvalo tooth and some tools for whale hunting."

The Art of Scrimshaw
In the Scrimshaw Museum in Horta, you'll find a remarkable collection of these historical artworks. The museum showcases hundreds of sperm whale teeth, each meticulously engraved with a variety of subjects. These pieces offer a unique window into the maritime history of the Azores and the lives of the whalers who called these islands home. The artistry involved is truly impressive, transforming what might have been discarded materials into intricate works of art.
Beyond whale teeth, the museum also features other scrimshaw pieces made from materials like walrus tusks and hippopotamus teeth, as well as objects and jewelry crafted from ivory. These diverse exhibits highlight the global reach of this art form and the various materials used by artisans. The collection provides a comprehensive look at scrimshaw, from its practical origins to its status as a significant historical art form.
Whaling in the Azores
Whalers from the Azores were known for their skill and bravery, often using small boats to hunt large whales in challenging open-sea conditions. The process was arduous and perilous, involving harpooning, towing the catch back to shore, and then processing the blubber for oil and other products. The scrimshaw art found in the museum is a direct legacy of this era, created by the very individuals who engaged in this demanding trade.
Today, whaling is no longer practiced in the Azores. The industry has been replaced by whale and dolphin watching tourism, which has become a major economic driver and a way to celebrate the marine life that was once hunted. The Scrimshaw Museum serves as a poignant reminder of this historical chapter, preserving the art and stories of the Azorean whaling heritage for future generations.
