What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Whale Factory Museum for its excellent presentation of the Azores' whaling history and sperm whale biology. The museum is lauded for its sensitive yet direct approach, informative exhibits, and the impressive sperm whale skeleton. Many recommend it as an essential first stop in Horta to understand the local heritage.
"For centuries, whaling (or whale hunting) directly shaped the culture of the Azores and impacted the life and traditions of its inhabitants. Whaling culminated in mid-20th century by developing into an efficient and methodical industrial complex resembling a production line. This museum does a fantastic job in showing and explaining the realities of this period openly and directly, but at the same time sensitively enough and without resorting to graphic depictions of the hunting itself. This makes the museum suitable for anyone who would like to learn about the history and the rise and fall of the whaling sector, but also about sperm whales, their behaviours, anatomy and biology. The exhibits are very well put together, with plenty of information included and without being overwhelming. Overall, we highly recommend adding the visit to this museum to your schedule when visiting Faial."
