Reviews Summary

Museo ng Makati is a small, free, and well-maintained museum offering a glimpse into Makati's history and local art scene. Visitors appreciate the historical photos, the replica map, and the friendly staff, though some wish for more extensive exhibits. It's ideal for a quick visit when in the area.

"Small museum with only 2 exhibits, place is quaint and cozy. Wish more can be done to expand on the city’s history so visitors can learn more about makati/ manila.

Would recommend visiting only when you’re around the area. Bags need to be set aside for safekeeping before entering the museum.

Friendly staff."

"Ok to visit ONLY when you’re in the vicinity. Else, skip this as there’s nothing much to see.

If you happen to be in Barangay Poblacion or chance this on your way, then it’s ok to swing by. The museum supposedly opens by 10AM according to the attendants. But I was there by 9AM+ and they accommodated me. Kudos to the friendly staff.

The museum is small yet air-conditioned and well maintained, even the restrooms.

The first floor shows old photos of Makati in the 1800s and early 1900s, long before it prospered and became the CBD. It also has a small room that exhibits some digital artworks by University of Makati students.

The second floor has posters showing the history of Makati and some artwork.

The third floor is closed off and appears to be a storage room.

Entrance is free and you have to register upon entering. The museum is closed on Mondays.

Bonus tip: Saints Paul and Peter Church is less than 5 minutes walk away so visit it as well if you are here."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Exploring Makati's Past

Museo ng Makati offers a fascinating glimpse into the city's rich history, predating its status as a modern financial hub. The museum's collection includes vintage photographs that vividly illustrate Makati's transformation from a rural landscape dotted with rice fields and swamplands to the bustling Central Business District it is today. Visitors can see snapshots of old cars, the original Makati airport, and group pictures of prominent figures from different eras. This visual journey is a key draw for those interested in Philippine history and urban development. Reddit

Beyond photographs, the museum also features displays on Makati's Mayors from 1912 to the present, offering insight into the city's leadership and governance over the decades. A significant highlight is the large replica of the Murillo Velarde 1734 Map of the Philippines, considered a foundational piece of Philippine cartography. These elements collectively provide a comprehensive, albeit concise, overview of Makati's heritage, making it an educational stop for both locals and tourists. Reddit

A Hub for Local Art

While its historical exhibits are a core feature, Museo ng Makati also serves as a platform for contemporary local art. The museum frequently hosts rotating art exhibits, showcasing the talent of Filipino artists, including students from the University of Makati and alumni groups. These exhibits can range from digital art and NFTs to traditional paintings and mixed media. Instagram+3

These showcases provide a dynamic contrast to the historical displays, offering visitors a taste of the current art scene in Makati. The "Paint to Pixel" exhibit, for instance, explored the synergy between digital and physical NFTs with augmented reality, demonstrating innovative approaches to art presentation. For art enthusiasts, checking the museum's schedule for these temporary exhibitions is highly recommended to experience the evolving creative landscape of the Philippines. Instagram

The Heritage Building

The museum itself is housed within a historical building that contributes significantly to its charm and appeal. This heritage structure offers a tangible connection to Makati's past, featuring architectural elements that speak to a bygone era. Visitors can appreciate details such as capiz windows and partially preserved chandeliers, which add a unique ambiance to the exhibition spaces. Reddit

This architectural character makes the museum not just a repository of artifacts and art, but also a point of interest in its own right. The building's presence enhances the overall experience, providing a sense of place and history that complements the exhibits within. It's a reminder of the city's evolution, with the old structure standing as a testament to its enduring legacy. Reddit
